Grade 3

Literacy
This term, our Grade 3 students have started a novel study on Matilda by Roald Dahl. As we read, we’re exploring key themes like resilience, friendship, and standing up for what’s right. Students are analysing character traits, setting descriptions, and important events to deepen their understanding of the story.
In Literacy, we’re using Matilda as a guide for our writing. Students are learning to write strong compound sentences using conjunctions like and, but, or, and so to connect ideas effectively. We’re also focusing on adding descriptive details to bring writing to life, taking inspiration from Dahl’s style.
Correct punctuation placement has been another key focus, helping students structure their sentences clearly. By applying these skills in their own writing, they’re developing stronger and more engaging pieces.
Maths This month, we’ve been on an incredible journey through the world of numbers, uncovering the secrets of place value, partitioning, and odd and even numbers. Let’s take a closer look at these amazing math skills! Mastering Place Value Every digit in a number has a special job! In 526, the 5 stands proudly in the hundreds place, the 2 holds the tens place, and the 6 belongs in the ones place. Knowing this helps us read, write, and compare numbers like true math experts!
Partitioning: Breaking It Down! Big numbers? No problem! Partitioning helps us break numbers into smaller, friendlier parts. For example, 86 can be split into 80 + 6 and 245 can be separated into 200 + 40 + 5. Using our place value knowledge, this makes solving tricky sums a breeze!
Odd or Even? Let’s Find Out! Here’s a cool math trick: If a number can be split into two equal groups, it’s even (like 2, 4, 6, 8). If not, it’s odd (like 1, 3, 5, 7). Need a quick check? Just look at the last digit—if it’s 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it's even. If it’s 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, it’s odd!
Integrated
In Integrated, students have started exploring our local community and changes over time. We spent time looking at aerial photographs of Clyde North and identified changes between 1970 and now. Students were able to identify changes to buildings, roads, natural environment and more. Can you see some changes between the two photos below?
Lets Talk
Our Positive Start fortnight was such a huge success, that students now have the opportunity to engage in the Social and Emotional Learning Program ‘Let’s Talk’ each fortnight. We have been consolidating our knowledge of personal strengths and what it means to have a growth mindset when we are working on things we may not enjoy or think we are very good at. Students have learned the importance of using the word ‘yet’ and persevering with a challenging task until they’re confident.
