Grade 1

Literacy

Over the past two weeks, Year 1 students have reviewed their literacy knowledge and skills from the end of Foundation. This involves the practise of individual letter sounds, how to segment the sounds in simple words and then blend them back together. Students have also been introduced to literacy terms such as phonemes, vowels, consonants and digraphs. To consolidate this knowledge, students have been participating in interactive songs and games. Towards the end of this fortnite, students were introduced to several new digraphs such as ff, ll, ss, zz and ck. They have also built their tricky word vocabulary learning useful words such as said, are, her, was, you and very.

Maths

Over the past two weeks, Grade 1 students have been exploring the concept of data. Each student selected a question of personal interest, such as "What’s your favourite animal?" or "What’s your favourite sport?" They surveyed their classmates to determine the most popular option and recorded the responses using tally marks. The following week students used their collected data to create picture graphs, visually displaying their findings. This hands-on activity not only helped students understand data collection and visual representation, but also engaged them in exploring topics that were meaningful to them.

Writing

Over the last two weeks, Year 1 students have been inquiring into the storybook of “Sam and Dave Dig A Hole”. They have enjoyed discussing the likelihood of being able to dig through the earth and what they might find deep below the surface. Students have learnt and discussed the meaning of 3 interesting words of the book: spectacular, improve and mission. They have worked on using these words in interesting sentences with particular focus on correctly using full stops. Be sure to ask your child about the storybook and how the story ended!

Additional Subjects

This fortnight in additional subjects, students covered various topics. For History they have begun to look at families and objects over time and how they have changed. In Respectful Relationships, they spent some time thinking about their personal strengths and how they benefit them at school and at home. In Culture, they learned about Acknowledgement and Welcome to Country, particularly at Grayling Primary School and why it is important to do. They will continue to look at these things going into the next part of Term 1
