Dear Families,
Week 7
As we continue our journey through Term 1, Lent is underway, and we are encouraging students to think about small ways they can show kindness and generosity, whether it’s helping a friend, using kind words, or showing gratitude. Through these actions, they are learning the importance of compassion and how their choices can make a difference in the lives of others.
Harmony Day is next week and students are encouraged to wear a touch of orange. Students might wear orange hair ties, socks, laces or a harmony day t-shirt with their school uniform
Religious Education focus: Students discussed Lent and the importance of the colour purple. This colour symbolizes the pain and suffering, but is also a royal colour. This colour is tied twice to Jesus as he suffered and is a King. Students also came to understand what different people do during Lent.
English focus:Students read "Meerkat Mail" by Emily Gravett. It encourages exploration of the world, but has the underlying message that home is always the best. Students created sentences using the conjunctions: but and because to create compound sentences. Word sorts involved the vocabulary below. Encouraging students to discuss meanings of the words and use them in sentences will help improve the literacy skills.
Reading: Make sure your child reads every night. Reading daily for just 15minute can greatly improve literacy skills. Children who read regularly have been shown to have greater academic achievement. This gap can become more apparent over time.
Mathematics focus: Students worked on partitioning a bar model. This is linked to simple addition and shows how a number can be made up of two or more parts.
SEL: Each morning all students from Foundation to Year 6 are doing a Check In. They do this by answering a few questions such as how are you feeling: good, just coping, struggling or feeling overwhelmed. This helps to address students needs especially when are feeling overwhelmed. The survey also addresses student safety at school and home and that they can talk to a trusted person if needed.
AUSLAN: Students use signs that are routinely used in the classroom.
Religious Education focus: Students examine the notion of compassion and a spiritual journey.
English focus:Next week we will read a book aligned with Harmony day that celebrates the diversity and unity of Australians.
Mathematics focus: Students will continue working on addition and subtraction as parts of a whole.
SEL: We are beginning to examine personal strengths.
History: Students continue to create their family trees.
