Welcome to the Week 7 update of learning in STSS!

It has certainly been a busy few weeks and we are well into learning in the Biological Science domain.

Foundation - Year 2

Our junior students have been busy learning about when wild animals may need our help in order for them to survive. They have looked at how drought, flooding or other events may impact an animal’s food sources, water sources or shelter options. They have also explored how various animals and plants can be considered a pest and ways that we deal with them in our everyday lives.

Here are some pictures of junior students in the process of making their bird feeders to hang in their gardens at home.

In Digital Technology, the Foundation and Year 1 students have been practising how they will use iPads to help them learn.

The Year 2 students have been transitioning to Chrome

books and have been learning about the basic features of a laptop.

Years 3 & 4

The middle school has been exploring ways that scientists classify various animals and plants, based on observable features along with other classifications such as invertebrates and vertebrates.

They are currently learning about the metamorphic and non metamorphic life cycles of various species. They have explored the life cycles of animals such as frogs, butterflies and dogs, to name a few.

Year 5 & 6

The senior students are deep into their learning about physical and behavioural adaptations of plants and animals. They have just begun working on a collaborative research project. This will see the students document their findings on their selected living organism’s physical and behavioural adaptations that support the species’ survival.

**Fun Fact: Did you know that the marine iguana (which has adapted from a rainforest environment to a marine one) can hold its breath underwater for up to one hour?

Have a lovely weekend,

on behalf of the STSS team.
