Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

After a rejuvenating long weekend, our community enjoyed our final week before camp. We look forward to departing for Phillip Island on Tuesday morning for two days chock full of activities and experiences. In preparation for your arrival at school at 7:30am on Tuesday, we suggest packing in collaboration with your child so that they are fully aware of what belongings they have and where they are.

We would also like to remind you that on Thursday, the day after we arrive back from camp, Grade 6 students will not be attending school. We're excited for the adventures that await at camp and wish you all a wonderful weekend!

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education Focus

During Religious Education, students continued to explore Lent; this week, they made a promise revolving around one of the three core Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

English Focus

Reading: This term, our students have been engaging with the novel Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson. Through their reading, they have explored key themes and responded to thought-provoking questions from the text.

Writing: This week, our students have been strengthening their writing skills in various ways. They have been expanding sentences using adverbial phrases, and strengthening their grasp on sentence structure by studying dependent and independent clauses. They have also continued to write their persuasive text on child labour, with a focus on text structure and the combination of objective arguments and emotive language.

Mathematics Focus

This week, students have been focusing on calculating the area and perimeter of a rectangle using formulae. Students have also deepened their understanding of the relationship between area and perimeter by drawing rectangles with the same area but different perimeter, and vice versa. This culminated in a project that mirrored real-world applications of these mathematical principles: the design of a house and the calculation and budgeting of its flooring.

Integrated Studies Focus

Students continued to explore the environmental changes caused by colonial settlement and their long-term effects on Australia’s landscape and ecosystems. They learned how colonial settlement dramatically changed the environment and the way of life for Aboriginal peoples. Through their studies, students explained how colonial activities, like deforestation, the introduction of farming practices, and the establishment of towns, changed the natural environment. They also discussed the significant impact these settlements had on Aboriginal peoples, including the disruption of their traditional lands, cultural practices, and ways of life.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

The focus was on our schoolwide expectation of safety, what this consists of, and how it is best upheld.

Auslan Focus

In Auslan, we began Unit 2B. Students focused on requests that are useful in the classroom, such as:

  • Please look at me
  • Look at that
  • Look at each other
  • Please listen
  • Come here/go there
  • Repeat all together

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
