On Thursday 6th of March, students from Year 9 DEA went on an excursion to the RMIT University. We went on this excursion to learn more about Climate Change.
While the students were there, they saw a variety of diverse things like VR, composite labs, aerospace testing, desalination lab, and many more.
The highlights of my day were getting to go see the composite lab and how they make carbon fibre. I enjoyed this because it was a very interactive activity as we each got a piece of carbon fibre to observe and feel. It was also thrilling to see that they had made a rocket out of solidified carbon fibre. Another activity I enjoyed was getting to use VR and walk through a virtual Woolworths!

Our Year Eleven Food Studies Students are exploring the origins and cultural roles of food. In particular, how the development of historical civilizations spurred the trading of valuable spices across the globe. Spices such as cinnamon, cassia, cardamom, ginger, and turmeric are being explored.
As part of their learning, Year Eleven Students prepared and baked batches of Spicey Mocha Cupcakes. Each cupcake was carefully decorated with a delicious Vanilla and Mocha Butter-Cream Icing.
Pictured here are two of our Year Eleven Students (Wahida R and Adil K) with Mrs Ogden, Mr Ogden, Mr Dewar and Mr Mullen celebrating their wonderful achievements in successfully baking and assembling their spicey cupcakes.

On the 8th March, I had the opportunity to support one of our very talented Year 12 students, Nahian, who was selected to be part of an exhibition. This exhibition was at the Quadrant Gallery, 72 Barkers Rd, Hawthorn, titled FEEL GOOD ART PRIZE until 16th April.
If you have an opportunity, please look at the many artworks on display and especially Nahian’s artwork. This is a great opportunity for future students to also participate in beginning to exhibit artworks in galleries.
Congratulations Nahian for applying to be part of this exhibition and may you have many more opportunities to exhibit in the future.
Please enjoy the images below.

Our wonderful Senior Art Making and Exhibiting students had an opportunity to view the amazing artworks by a Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, on the 4th March this year. They were able to see Kusama’s journey over 8 decades which showcased how she started creating artworks to what her artworks are now. They also attended a lecture regarding the work that is involved in preparing for such an exhibition and have become familiar with the many roles such as a curator, exhibition designer and conservator. This lecture will support our students to further understand the Art Industry which is also part of their work for their upcoming SATs and SACs.
This exhibition allowed students to experience artworks in a very different environment, such as going through different rooms, weaving through sculptures and experiencing the infinity rooms in small groups. Students enjoyed this excursion and once again students have gained a very different experience which may also enhance their own making of artworks.
Like every year, I look forward to supporting our students and seeing their creations develop into final artworks. Remember, every year we will be showcasing our talented students’ artworks towards the end of the year during Term 4 Week 2. Look out for this space in the near future where an official invitation will be given to our students and our community, and we look forward to seeing you attend and supporting our talented students.
On Tuesday, the 4th of March, we went to an excursion to the National Gallery of Victory (NGV) to attend the Yayoi Kusama exhibition.
At the start of the day, the whole class met up at a bus stop near the school before 8:55am to ensure that we would be on time to board the City Loop train. When we arrived at Flinders Street Station, we walked to the NGV for about 5 minutes. We then went into the exhibition.
There were 2 parts of the exhibition. The first part was all about her earliest art works in Japan and New York. We saw many different artforms she used such as paintings, installations, collages, videos and photographs. The second part of the exhibition was all about her recent artworks. The ones that interested me the most were the interactive rooms. There were rooms that had mirrors in a shape of a circle all over the walls and ceiling, and a whole room covered with a yellow background and black polka dots. It was a fun and new experience for me as I’ve never attended an exhibition that included interactive rooms such as those.
We also attended a lecture about the exhibition and how it was managed. We learned the major roles of a curator, exhibition designer, and a conservator. They also told us how they were able to display big artworks in the gallery while considering the safety of the people and the security of the artworks.

On 4 March, the Year 11 and 12 Art Making and Exhibiting students visited the National Gallery of Victoria in the city for an excursion to the Yayoi Kusama exhibition. One thing that stood out to me was realising that Kusama's work is not just about polka dots but also explores deeper themes like mental health. I learned how she uses elements of infinity to express feelings of endlessness and confinement. The class really enjoyed the exhibition, especially the interactive experience.
After the exhibition, we attended a lecture about the behind-the-scenes process of Kusama's exhibition. We learned about the three main roles in exhibition design: curators, exhibition designers, and conservators. The lecture also explained the logistics of importing large structures into NGV’s main hall and were shocked at how complex the process was. Overall, the excursion was an eye-opening experience on how exhibitions are carefully curated, designed, and maintained behind the scenes, as well as the interesting aspect of Kusama's artwork.
