Year 2 Term 4 Overviews

Wominjeka Year 2 Families!

Reading:

This term in reading, Year 2 students will recognise multisyllable words or take them apart by syllables to solve them. They will search for information within paragraphs, sentences and phrases, as well as search for information across chapters that are connected to a single plot. They will recognise and understand traits in complex characters that change over time. Students talk about what they know about a topic before reading the text and identify new knowledge gained from reading.

This term, we will be introducing ‘biographies’ and inferring the importance of a biography that may be distant in time and geography from students’ own knowledge. Students will also make connections, compare, and contrast between events in chapters that are connected to a single plot.

Writing:

This term in writing, Year 2 students will learn how to identify commas in texts and understand the purpose of a comma in a list. They will also begin writing more difficult or unfamiliar words phonetically, ensuring that all phonemes are represented. In addition, they will spell words that include learnt digraphs and long vowel sounds, as well as write one or two-syllable words with consonant blends. As their skills develop, students will correctly spell common words with silent letters and confidently use three-letter consonant blends in their writing.

We will be focusing on the genres of narrative, persuasive and poetry, using the ‘writing process’ of plan, draft, edit, revise and publish. There will be an emphasis on word choice, spelling, punctuation and description in order to engage the reader.

Mathematics:

This term in maths, students will learn to measure and compare objects using length, capacity, and mass with appropriate informal units, including smaller units when more accuracy is needed. They will explore and classify shapes by counting sides and using spatial terms like “opposite,” “parallel,” “curved,” and “straight.” Students will understand and represent fractions such as halves, quarters, and eighths in relation to shapes, objects, and collections, and recognize how these fractions are used in everyday situations. They will also develop an understanding of multiplication as repeated addition and arrays, and division as grouping into equal sets, solving simple problems using these concepts. Students will apply repetition in arithmetic operations, like multiplication and division, and investigate number sequences that increase or decrease by twos, threes, fives, and tens.

Inquiry: Social Responsibility

This term in Inquiry, students will explore how the past informs the present. They will identify significant people and places in their families and community. They will identify the features and content of historical sources and the perspectives of people in the past and present. The students will identify and describe a range of ways to be respectful in intercultural experiences.

Reading:

It is important for your child to continue reading every night. Every morning your child is expected to change their take home book or utilise WUSHKA to practice their reading goal. This should be documented in your child’s yellow Take Home Reading Journal.
