Reading:
In reading this term, students will engage with a range of different types of texts, including decodable and authentic texts, using developing phonic knowledge. Students will discuss and compare the purposes and organisation of familiar texts and recognise that the structure of a text may include words and pictures. Students will share character descriptions by using text clues in the words, illustrations and their prior knowledge and retell key events in stories. Students will continue to practice recognising most high-frequency words when reading a text. Students will practice decoding skills such as recognising sounds that can be produced by different letters and self-correcting or asking for assistance when meaning breaks down.
Writing:
In writing, students will focus on creating procedural texts and narratives. Procedural texts will be driven by writing experiences, such as making Fairy bread, paper plane, popcorns, funny face biscuits, followed by students writing texts using correct structure and an expanded vocabulary of new verbs and adverbs. In our narratives unit, mentor texts will be explored to support development of ideas, word choice, sentence fluency and organisation. Throughout the term, students will explore different ideas for writing, craft well built sentences and identify how sentences are sequenced. They will be adventurous in using vocabulary such as adverbs, actions verbs, adjectives and nouns to help readers visualise the characters, setting and the events in their narrative. As authors, they will form upper-case and lower-case letters to present their writing, experiment with adding and deleting sounds to create new words and read back their writing to ensure that it makes sense.
Mathematics:
In Maths this term, students will describe the duration and sequence of events using years, months, weeks, days and hours. They will continue to develop their knowledge of fractions and halves by sharing a collection into equal groups. They will move onto an Addition and Subtraction unit where they will use a variety of calculation strategies to recall and demonstrate proficiency with addition and subtraction facts. They will use this knowledge to answer real life maths problems. Students will also have the opportunity to revisit Place Value and consolidate their understanding of ones, tens and hundreds. Students will build on their knowledge and understanding of measurement by exploring length. They will measure, compare and order objects using mathematical language to explain their reasoning. There will be a continual focus on place value, as well as being able to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s and using this to help them count collections efficiently.
SEL (Social and Emotional Learning):
In SEL (social emotional learning) this term, students will be collaborating with their peers in a range of different STEM tasks. Throughout these tasks, students will have the opportunity to observe, reflect and describe what respectful teamwork Looks Like, Sounds Like and Feels Like. Students will be supported in identifying their own strengths that they bring to a team, while practising using a growth mindset to help build confidence and resilience when attempting new and challenging tasks. Students will have a big focus this term on respectful communication by exploring different points of views, opinions and beliefs- this is to help them to overcome challenges that they may have (both in the classroom and out in the yard whilst socialising).. They will have the opportunity to listen to different opinions and share their own opinions, building their appreciation for the differences of the people around them and ability to respect and work alongside others with different opinions successfully. Towards the end of the term, the students will have some time to reflect upon all of their hard work in Year 1 and begin to have discussions about how they are feeling heading in to Year 2. We will do some work around change and how everyone can handle change differently.
Unit of Inquiry - Environmental Sustainability
This term in our Unit of Inquiry, students will investigate the statement “Throughout history some aspects of daily life have changed and some have remained the same.” Students begin this unit by exploring artefacts from the past, and what these items can show us about daily life during this time. The students will focus on changes to play, learning and technology by exploring artefacts of each and making comparisons between the past and now. The students will then have the opportunity to design and create what play, learning and technology may look like in the future.
Ways to Help Your Child At Home:
Home Reading - Our Home Reading program continues. The expectation is for your child to read their take home book 5 nights a week, answer some comprehension questions that an older family member asks them and record the title, date and a comment in the yellow reading journal themselves. Take home books are for enjoyment and for your child to practise their reading strategies, and are not meant to be a challenging task for your child.
Learning Apps - Your child can use Wushka for levelled texts to support their home reading. IXL can be used to support literacy and numeracy at home, and practice the skills that are being taught in the classroom. There are content specific tasks as well as fun games that students can play to help support learning. Classroom teachers will be using Seesaw to share learning and achievements with families. Each week a Student of The Week will be celebrated with families, as well as PATHs kid compliments sent to PATHs kid of the week. Teachers will also be sharing with families a learning experience each week to provide insight into what students are exploring and learning about in our classrooms. Please contact your child’s teacher if you need any assistance in accessing any of these learning platforms.
Library - Library sessions have begun this term for Year 1. Each week your child will have the opportunity to go to our school library, explore different books, and borrow a book. Please ensure your child has a library bag or satchel they can use in order to be able to borrow a book. Books must be returned each week before a new book can be borrowed.
Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning.
