Visual Arts Term 4 Overviews

Prep
This term, our Prep students are discovering the art of collage! In line with the Unit of Inquiry on Environmental Sustainability, we are exploring how different textures and materials — such as leaves, twigs, wool, bark, and paper — can be used into artworks. They are learning how to select, arrange, and attach materials while understanding of colour and shape. Our young artists will use recycled materials to create collages that express creativity and care for the planet.
Grade 1
In term 4, Grade 1 students will explore clay as a medium of art. They will focus on the art elements of form and shape and begin to understand how a three-dimensional artwork is created. They will learn and practice key hand-building techniques such as rolling, coiling, pinching, and slab-building. The skills will help them shape and construct their own clay sculptures. Throughout the unit, students will be encouraged to think creatively and make connections between the materials they use and the forms they create.
Grade 2
In Term 4, our Grade 2 students are exploring collage as a way of “painting with paper.” Building on the visual art learning from earlier in the year, students are learning to cut, tear, layer, and arrange materials to communicate ideas and feelings. Through experimentation with balance, symmetry, and contrast, students express their creativity while understanding of how artists use composition to tell a visual story. Inspired by collage artists, this unit encourages imaginative thinking and confidence in art-making.
Grade 3
This term Year 3 students will explore the ancient art of clay pottery from past to present. They will work on developing skills and techniques to improve their hand building and sculpting and create a one-of-a-kind clay artefact. Term 3 learning is rich in hands-on activities creating clay artworks that are functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Grade 4
This term our Grade 4 artists are diving into the world of textiles! We’ve started by learning the basics — threading needles, tying knots, and exploring the difference between natural and man-made fibres. Students are experimenting with design ideas through sketching, colour and material exploration before creating their own monster dolls. This unit has been designed with creativity, problem-solving, and persistence in the forefront as students learn to sew, stuff, and finish their soft sculptures. We’ll also be making pom-poms and twisty bracelets to showcase at the DCC Art Show later this term.
Grade 5
This Term, Grade 5 students will work on the Painting unit. The focus will be on exploring colour categories-primary, secondary, tertiary, warm, and cool and understanding how art elements and principles contribute to an artwork. They will investigate the notable watercolour artists and their style of work. Building on this understanding, students will plan and create their own watercolour compositions that will reflect the intentional choices and the creative process.
Grade 6
This term Year 6 students will investigate the elements of art and principles of design through the use of digital technologies. They will look at past, present and emerging artists and use their works as inspiration for their own artworks. Students will use computer applications to create their artworks and investigate how artists convey meaning and purpose through their art.
