Year 6 Term 4 Overviews

As we enter the final term of the year, our Grade 6 students are preparing for an exciting conclusion to their primary school journey. With a strong focus on deep thinking, communication, and personal growth, students will continue to refine their skills across all learning areas as they get ready to transition to secondary school.

Reading and Writing

Students will explore persuasive texts and learn how writers use language, sound, and images to influence an audience. They will analyse how emotive and formal language can be used to shape opinions and will practise crafting their own persuasive pieces on topics they are passionate about. Later in the term, students will apply their skills through structured debates, considering multiple perspectives and presenting their arguments with confidence and respect.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have begun the term with a three-week unit on angles and tessellations. They have practised using protractors accurately to measure and create precise angles, applying their understanding of angle relationships to find unknown values. Next, students will explore right prisms, identifying their features and comparing cross sections to distinguish between right and oblique prisms. This hands-on learning will continue to strengthen their spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Inquiry

This term, students are exploring the topic of Environmental Sustainability. They will examine how everyday choices impact the world around us, considering how resources are distributed and used, who makes those decisions, and what is fair and ethical in the process. Through inquiry and discussion, students will practise asking thoughtful questions to develop a deeper understanding of global and local issues. This unit encourages critical and ethical thinking about the relationship between people, society, and the environment.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

A major focus for Term 4 is change and transition. As students prepare to move into secondary school, they will engage in activities that build resilience, adaptability, and confidence. Grade 6 students will have opportunities to connect with Year 7 students to ask questions and gain insight into high school life. These sessions aim to ease concerns and help students feel more prepared for the exciting changes ahead.

Grade 6 will celebrate the end of their primary school journey with an excursion to Adventure Park and a certificate ceremony at school. We will be sending out information and Compass events about this in the coming weeks.

We are incredibly proud of all the hard work the Grade 6 students have put in this year. Their growth, resilience and enthusiasm has been inspiring to see and we look forward to celebrating all their achievements as they prepare for their transition into Secondary School.
