Year 5 Term 4 Overviews

Wominjeka Year 5 families,
Welcome to the final term of Year 5. Sadly last term, we said goodbye to Dilara who obtained employment in a school closer to home. The students of 5H have now settled into their new classrooms with the teachers and classmates welcoming them with open arms. Christine is teaching 4 days this term - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Millie who has returned from maternity leave will be teaching 5C on Tuesday’s.
The beginning of the term saw 50 of the year 5 students attend Anglesea Discovery Camp. Here they were challenged on the Vertical Climb and Giant Swing, they made damper over a campfire, canoed in the estuary, completed a range of beach activities, but most importantly we saw the students emerge from their comfort zones, support one another, work together as a team and have a great time. Students who remained at school participated in a program that allowed for team building activities, sport, craft, and amazing race.
Important Events
- Celebration of Learning
- All classes - 2:30pm, Tuesday 9th December
Literacy
This term in Literacy, students will explore Explanation Text and poetry. They will connect their learning from Natural Disaster to explain how or why they occur. Students will investigate and apply complex sentences to their writing, and identify how the author uses tone, specific and precise words and pace in their writing. They will apply this to their own writing to engage the reader. Identifying and understanding the purpose of cohesive devices - word groups, signposting (headings and subheadings), synonyms, text connectives and repetition will be analysed during reading and allow students to apply this knowledge to their own writing through the explanation text and poetry.
Mathematics
During Mathematics, students will explore measurement through open ended problem solving questions to deepen understanding of area, perimeter, length, mass, capacity, angles, 2D shapes and 3D objects. We will be strengthening our knowledge of the four operations, applying this to open ended problem solving questions and creating simple budgets. Students will estimate answers prior to solving and using the most efficient strategy for written and mentally.
Inquiry
Our key learning area for Inquiry this term is Environmental Science. This connects to the curriculum areas Geography, Economics and Business and Critical and Creative Thinking. We are developing an understanding of Changing Earth, Changing Lives: Investigating Natural Disasters and Human Action. We will understand that natural disasters are caused by environmental change through environment, scientific and human causes, and how the government, aide and community respond differently. We will explore when nature turns dangerous through the natural disasters: bushfires, flood, cyclones, earthquakes, and how people prepare and respond to them.
SEL
Our SEL focus for this term is Help Seeking where students will understand the importance of what help seeking is, why we seek help, how to seek help, and identifying and exploring emotions that we feel when seeking help or someone is seeking help from them. Connecting our SEL learning to our Inquiry unit of how to provide assistance to those who have experienced devastation with a natural disaster.
Home Learning
Students are encouraged to engage with 30 minutes of reading each night, which can come in a variety of formats, including fiction and nonfiction books, newspapers and online sources.
As well as this, students have access to the IXL app at all times, which allows them access to a range of Literacy and Numeracy resources and games connected to the learning we are doing at school. Students have completed a diagnostic assessment earlier in the year which provides them with relevant challenges and teachers routinely assign and highlight tasks which challenge students to demonstrate their understanding and reflect upon their learning areas.
We’re looking forward to another fantastic term and continuing to build upon the strong start our Year 5 cohort has made. As always, if you have any questions, queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s classroom teacher and we’ll be more than happy to help out.
