Acting Principal
Dear Parents and Students,
It is a great honour to write this piece as the short-term Acting Principal. I absolutely love this school. When I applied for a teaching position in late 2011, I was captivated by JMSS’s mission and vision. The opportunity to be part of something new, something different, something truly special was simply irresistible… and I have loved every minute of my time here.
Although I had a few short stints away from JMSS in 2018 and again from 2020–2021, I was drawn back by the same sense of purpose that first inspired me. In 2022, when the Assistant Principal role became available, I knew it was the right time to return and continue contributing to this remarkable school community.
As Victoria’s only specialist Mathematics and Science school, JMSS is an incredibly unique place. It is a vibrant melting pot of intellect, curiosity, and aspiration. With a highly transient population, however, I’ve observed subtle shifts in our shared moral and ethical compass over time. At a recent assembly, I spoke about this, while also highlighting the incredible opportunity before us.
Right now, the 660 students and 65 staff who make up JMSS have the chance to shape the next chapter of our school’s story. Together, we can create an environment where every person is seen, heard, and valued and where respect and dignity guide every interaction. For me, this is the true measure of a great school: a place where everyone can learn, grow, and become the very best version of themselves.
I’m proud to say that 95% of our student body already lives out these values each day. We are developing not only brilliant thinkers but also kind, compassionate individuals who will go on to make a meaningful difference in their communities long after they leave JMSS. That’s the type of school I want to be part of and the legacy I hope we continue to build.
Another essential part of our culture is looking out for one another. On 11 September, we marked R U OK? Day, a powerful reminder that sometimes the simplest question can make the biggest difference. As educators, we give so much of ourselves to our students, colleagues, and school community. As students, there’s a constant focus on working hard and striving to be a good person. In the midst of all this, it’s easy to forget to pause, check in with others, and even check in with ourselves.
R U OK? Day encourages us to do exactly that, to start meaningful conversations by asking, “Are you OK?” and genuinely listening to the response. It’s about connection, compassion, and letting people know they don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. If you notice someone who might be struggling, take a moment to reach out. It doesn’t need to be a big conversation, just a simple question and a willingness to listen. And if you need support yourself, please know that my door is always open.
As Term 3 draws to a close, we approach a significant moment of transition: the passing of the baton from our 2025 Captains and Leaders to the incoming 2026 team. This year’s leaders have been nothing short of outstanding. Their passion, dedication, and creativity have left a lasting mark on our school.
One recent highlight was the Battle of the Bands, an event entirely student-led by our Music Captains, Thomas McRay and Rubette Wong-Vleeskens, alongside Music Executive members Lottie O’Hare and Violet Neubauer. Their hard work and organisation resulted in a phenomenal event that showcased the incredible talent within our school. Special mention must also go to M. Perry, who successfully rallied a group of staff to join 60 students in a spirited performance of Live and Let Die - a true crowd-pleaser!
As we celebrate these achievements, I would like to sincerely thank our 2025 Leaders for their service and vision, and warmly congratulate our 2026 Leaders as they prepare to step into their roles at the start of Term 4. I am excited to see how they will guide us into the next exciting chapter of JMSS.

As Term 3 comes to a close, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support while I had the privilege of stepping in for Mr Andrew Chisholm. I am also deeply grateful to Mrs Jude Cohen for so capably taking on my role during this time.
As we head into the holiday break, I’d like to gently remind everyone of the importance of looking after yourselves and each other.
