My Footy Career by Zahra Kelly
I started playing footy for the Seymour Lions at a young age and fell in love with it instantly, and I was the only girl playing. As the years went by, I was able to encourage other girls to join the sport and we got up to eight girls, but sadly covid hit and we couldn’t continue the season. Due to the change of age groups, I was unable to continue with Seymour Lions and I joined Wallan Magpies, fortunately there was an all-girls team and I instantly clicked with my team. Metro footy is a lot different to country footy, it felt easier for sure so for my first year of girls footy I dominated, I even stepped up to play under 18’s while still being 14 myself. My team ended the season by not losing a single match, but again I sadly had to leave that team as I wasn’t able to play in a higher level because I lived in Seymour. I was able to train with the Murray Bushrangers, and even got selected for two games. I then played for Shepparton United which was under 18’s and a Women’s only team. I now play mixed under 18’s and advocate woman in this sport that I love. It’s my gateway out of reality; I feel free when I play footy and it’s a good way to release anger. I don’t think anything could replace it!
