Art & Stem

Art

At the end of term 3 students have been busy in the Art Room. Year 2, 3 & 4 learnt about analogous colours which are the colours next to each other on the colour wheel. Using their choice of colours, they used watercolour to create these beautiful zen tangle designs before moving on to study the work of well known Aussie artist Ken Done. Using his paintings of Sydney Harbour at night and images inspired by his night diving series, students recreated their own Ken Done style artworks, using black paper as a base and oil pastels.

STEAM

As part of our STEAM unit on creating Curiosity Cabinets, Year 5 & 6 students are also making and learning about the 5 main categories of items that usually go in them which are known as Artificialia (man-made antiquities and artworks) Naturalia (plants, animals, and other items from nature), Scientifica (scientific instruments), Exotica (objects from distant lands) and Mirabilia (a bucket term for other marvels that spark wonder). These butterfly specimens represent the Naturalia category and were created after learning origami to make the frames, studying an online butterfly enclosure and spotting live specimens, and discussing the ethics of butterfly collecting in the modern age.

Year 2/3/4s recently created these fantastic 3D printed plant pots during their STEAM classes. Using TinkerCAD, an online 3D design program, students learnt to use new technology to solve existing design problems. They had to design a plant pot based on set criteria and add their own creative flair.

F/1 students recently experimented with light sensitive papers in their STEAM lessons as part of a unit on materials testing. Using sun print paper, they created cyanotypes. This early form of photography captures the "shadow" of any object placed on it after a few minutes in the sun. The students loved watching the chemical reaction in the paper as it turned white and captured their flowers and leaves on the paper.

James Cordy recently completed these 3D printed wall sculptures as part of his Year 9 &10 3D printing course work folio. Inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson, James created the works after researching her sculptures and creating his own version using TinkerCAD.
