Curricular Arts News

Ms Christine Larsen - Curriculum Leader The Arts

Two of our Year 12 Visual Art Students, Elijah Smith and Gabriel Dinneen, have been selected to represent the College in the annual Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art, which recognises and promotes excellence in senior Visual Art education through Queensland schools. Judging, due to take place in September, culminates in the selection of 40–50 artworks deemed to represent innovation and excellence for inclusion in a Central exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art, mid-2024.

Four of our Year 11 students – Ashley Kani, Darcy Hotston, Ethan Torrens, and Phillip-John Catalano, and Year 12 student Gabriel Dinneen have entered artworks into the 2023 Incubator Hands on Art Award. The Incubator Gallery provides senior students and young artists the experience of exhibiting their artwork in a public art space. The selection process involves artworks being chosen for an exhibition held at the Hands On Art Substation Gallery in Paddington. These artworks will be in the competition to win the Incubator main prize, as well as the People’s Choice award.

Congratulations to Gus Watson (Year 11), who was awarded Highly Commended in the Year 11 and 12 category at the recent Independent Education Union Art Design Awards. The theme this year was “Colours of Life” and Gus’ winning photograph is a perfect representation of this theme.

We would also like to congratulate our August “Artwork of the Month” recipient, Year 8 student Nathan Ware, for his mandala-inspired linoprint, which he produced as part of the current unit of study, “Nature Translations.”
