Arts and Design Technology Showcase

Entries due next Friday 27th October

The start of Term 4 has been a busy one, as our clever and creative students and staff from the Arts and Design Technology Learning Area continue to  prepare  for our annual Art and Technology Showcase event to be held in Week 5 of this Term.

The event will be open to the public on Thursday 2nd November from 6.00-8.00pm and will be held in the Brigidine Centre.

This exhibition will, again, showcase student’s work, from Foundation to Year 12 and will include pieces that have been designed, manufactured and created in Visual Arts, Visual Communication Design, Media, Technology Wood and Metal, Food Technology and Performing Arts.

This year, our Art and Design Technology showcase will be opened by local artist, ‘Tank’ from Tank Art’s.

Tank has an eclectic brand of public sculpture - such as the brightly painted fibreglass cows, quirky murals and large-scale metal sculptures which can be seen scattered around many of the shops, parks, riverside and public spaces of the Greater Shepparton area.

Below is a small selection of Tank’s work.

We look forward to welcoming Tank to our College and hearing more about his career and art work when he joins us on Thursday evening.

So, how do I enter the 2023 Art and Technology Showcase?

There are two ways to enter your work in the Showcase.

1. Your teacher will select work created in class.

2. You can enter work completed outside of the classroom, in one or more, of the following categories:

  • Collaborative entry (get a group of friends together and create something spectacular)
  • Individual creations of any media (paper, mixed media, wood, glass, metal, photography, Lego etc.)

Entries must be in to your teacher by Friday 27th October.

We look forward to seeing your wonderful creations!

What is the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP)?

The Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP) was established in 2001 to work for a humane, just and inclusive approach for people seeking asylum in Australia.

It is a Melbourne based initiative of the Brigidine Sisters who have been engaged in education and social justice since arriving in Echuca from Ireland in 1886.

Australia has a long history of welcoming migrants and refugees and is a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, but it has become increasingly apparent since the 1990s that people genuinely seeking asylum in Australia are treated unjustly. Many have been held in detention centres, both in Australia and offshore and if released are dependent on charities for their survival.

Sr Brigid Arthur regularly visited detainees in Melbourne and became painfully aware of the plight of asylum seekers if they were released into the community, so they established BASP. Initially, financial support came from the Brigidine Sisters, but as time has gone by there is increasing financial support from donations and fundraising events. The day to day support of the asylum seekers in the care of BASP is provided by over 70 highly committed volunteers.
