School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Have you seen some values points popping up on your child’s dashboard?
Have they come home excited with the glory of receiving a canteen voucher?
Maybe you are wondering why you have received a postcard in the mail?
This is all thanks to the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program. SWPBS is a proactive behaviour management strategy that creates a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students. It focuses on explicitly teaching positive behaviours rather than simply punishing negative ones.
By setting clear expectations across the whole school, students understand what is required of them in different settings. SWPBS promotes consistency among staff, which reduces confusion and behaviour issues. It helps build positive relationships between teachers and students through encouragement and recognition. As a result, schools often see improved student wellbeing, increased engagement in learning, and fewer behavioural disruptions.
At Bairnsdale Secondary College, we have seen the power of the program over the past two years, with teachers effectively implementing the matrix and its expectations, and this has led to a decrease in class exits. This positive outcome assists students being in the classroom more and developing lifelong habits, including academic and social skills.
The SWPBS is not linked in anyway to academic achievements. If your child is receiving values points, it is based around their capabilities to respectfully, responsibly and resiliently engage with peers, their learning and other classroom based activities. However, the better a student can engage in the classroom with peers and the activities, the more chance they have of developing academically.
The program here at the school is to acknowledge and recognise the students who are developing important life habits and allow them to see that their behaviours are valued and are not going unnoticed. This positive outcome empowers each student to develop their growth as a person.
If you have any questions around the points system, the rewards or any other queries around the behaviour matrix, feel free to ask your child’s teacher or make an inquiry and the school’s SWPBS team will help with your requests. Remember, changes and attitudes are developed when we as people feel valued, this is our way of showing our wonderful students that their behaviours are not going unnoticed and that they are valued.
