Homework
At Lysterfield Primary School our students work incredibly hard during the day. At 3.30pm when they leave, they need time to unwind and have fun. We believe that in order to live a happy and healthy life, it is important to participate in extracurricular activities outside school. We want students to join sports clubs, Scouts, do music lessons and art classes as these are important for a child’s overall growth and social connections. We also understand that homework puts a lot of stress on families.
In addition to our beliefs, there is no evidence that homework in a primary school setting has a marked impact on students' learning or success. What is proven is that reading daily has a significant impact on a child’s ability to decode and comprehend. As such mandated homework at Lysterfield Primary School is limited to reading daily, including the practising of phonics (letter/sound relationships). Level newsletters will outline the expectations around reading and how teachers will support students with having appropriate texts to read. For some students that may not be making the expected progress for their year level, it may be beneficial for the teacher and parents to work together to reinforce the learning from the classroom with follow-up work.
We also understand that some students and families would like to practise other skills at home. To support this, at the beginning of each school year, parents will be provided with a set of additional resources that can be used for students to practise other curriculum areas. This work is not mandated and it is up to parents to implement and monitor, staff will not correct this work.

Learning Reflection
📖 Literacy
Over the past fortnight, the grade 3 students have become engrossed in the novel Matilda, sparking their curiosity and wonderings about the novel. They have continued to build on their vocabulary by learning new words such as eccentric and pleasant, and reviewed previously learnt vocabulary words such as fond and appalling.
In grammar and sentence level writing, students have been consolidating their knowledge around forming sentences, learning that a sentence is a group of words that make sense by themselves, and always contain a subject and a predicate.
Students have been learning the correct way to structure a narrative writing piece. First, students planned their own narrative by planning the orientation, action, problem, resolution and conclusion. Students have then been drafting their narratives by turning their plans into full sentences, building on their own ideas to formulate their very own narratives, including fronted adverbial phrases and tier 2 vocabulary.
Preview:
Over the next fortnight, students will continue reading Matilda, building a deep understanding of the text, and learning a new range of vocabulary. They will finish writing their narratives by completing the conclusion paragraph, and continue to enhance their writing through adding in adverbial phrases and tier 2 vocabulary consistently.
➗ Maths
Over the past fortnight, students have been focussing on our addition and subtraction unit, and most recently our unit on time. In the addition and subtraction unit, students have learnt effective strategies to solve two and three digit addition and subtraction equations, including partitioning, evaluating on a number line, and mental calculation. Students have used their knowledge of bar models, fact families, and bridging to their nearest ten to assist them in their calculations.
In the time unit, students have been learning formal units of time through keywords such as second, minute, hour and day. They have also been exploring the idea of elapsed time and estimating the unit in which certain activities are measured. For example, a school day would be measured in hours, and a holiday would be measured in days.
Preview:
Looking ahead, students will continue to build their skills in formal units of time through being involved in activities such as planning a sequence of events and estimating duration. They will also practice estimating short amounts of time, and checking these estimates with timers.
🗺️ Knowledge Rich Unit
Over the past fortnight, students have been learning about the geographical characteristics and features of New Zealand. They explored the major landmarks and attractions in the north and south islands in New Zealand, and then labelled a map with the different cities. Students also learnt about the natural and managed features in New Zealand and discussed which cities in New Zealand they would like to visit, whilst also comparing these features, to the natural and managed features in Australia.
Preview:
The unit on ‘Australia and its Neighbours’ is concluding for the grade 3 students and they have formed a deep and meaningful understanding of natural and managed features in both Australia and New Zealand.
Wellbeing
Students have focused on tuning into their bodies and understanding the different feelings that arise when forming new friendships and meeting new people. They brainstormed ideas on how to manage these feelings, and also questions that can be asked when meeting someone new to keep the conversation flowing. Students were able to practice this with different peers in their class! They also learnt that friends can have different interests to themselves and that it is important to build a range of meaningful friendships that fulfil them. Over the next fortnight, students will participate in another Circles session where they are able to interact with students from various year levels, and practice building on their social skills.
