Learning Reflection

📖 Literacy

Literature

Students have proudly completed their Literature unit on The First Scientists, exploring the theme of recognising and valuing the knowledge, innovation and contributions of Indigenous Australians. Through this text, students learnt how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples used careful observation and creativity to develop tools and technologies to meet their needs and care for Country.

As a culminating task, students created their own information reports about Indigenous tools featured in the text. They thoughtfully selected a tool and included a range of informative text features such as a title, subheadings, topic sentences, facts and labelled diagrams. Students also practised structuring their writing by including a clear thesis statement and concluding statement. We are so proud of their hard work, focus and determination to complete this task, and the effort they showed in creating detailed and informative reports.

Preview - Over the next fortnight in Literacy, students will continue working in their fluency pairs, reading goal sessions, and handwriting lessons, focusing on the letters Pp, Vv, Jj, Ww, and Xx. Teachers will continue to support and assess students as they practise their individual reading goals.

At the end of each week, students will practise their reading fluency by timing and assessing their peers during one-minute passages, with a focus on reducing errors and increasing words read per minute.

Knowledge Rich

Gallery Image

Over the past fortnight, students have been engaging with their first Knowledge Rich unit for 2026. They were so excited to begin, and have been diving headfirst into our topic Geography of Australia. This unit centres around the idea that Australia is a special country with many different places, people, and cultures. By learning about our land, our neighbours, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, we can understand how people live in different ways and why it’s important to care for our country and respect everyone who calls it home.

Thus far, we have covered the following big questions:

  • Where is Australia in the World?
  • How many states and territories does Australia have and what is an example of both?
  • Why is the population of Australian states and territories different?
  • What are the major bodies of water in Australia and how do people use them?
  • Which major ecosystems does Australia boast and what characteristics do they have?

Preview - Over the next fortnight, students will continue this unit, discovering the answers to the following big questions:

  • Where do people live in Australia and what are some of the differences between them?
  • Why is Australia such a multicultural country?

➗ Maths

In Maths, our Grade 2 students have been developing their understanding of time and rotation. They have been practising reading, representing and drawing the time to the hour, half hour, quarter past and quarter to on an analog clock, carefully identifying the role of the hour and minute hands. Students have also explored how quarter, half and three-quarter turns link directly to the movement of the minute hand on a clock.

In addition, we have been investigating clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, using both our bodies and classroom materials to demonstrate quarter, half and three-quarter turns. Students have practised turning shapes clockwise and anti-clockwise and identifying half, quarter and three-quarter turns in different contexts. It has been fantastic to see them making strong connections between time, movement and rotation while building confidence in using mathematical language to explain their thinking.

Preview - Over the next two weeks, the Grade 2 students will complete their unit on time by learning to use calendars to identify days and dates, collect categorical data from a list and create a data table. The students will then begin their addition and subtraction unit.

😊Wellbeing

Last week during our wellbeing session, the Grade 2s jumped into the four friendship facts:#1 No friendship is perfect

#2 Every friendship is different

#3 Trust and respect are the two most important qualities of a friendship

#4 Friendships change…. And that’s okay

The students engaged in conversation around each fact, exploring what that might look like and making connections to their own life before creating posters to have at home!

This week, students explored the Friend-o-meter through our Friendology lessons. They talked about what makes a friendship feel good, the feelings linked to healthy and unhealthy friendships, and how to read body language to build empathy. Students also enjoyed a fun experiment, discovering that smiles can be contagious, before creating our own friend-o-meters!
