Courage to Care Event

On Tuesday, we hosted our first Cluster event 'Courage to Care.' Students were placed into 3 classrooms, amongst peers from different schools, to learn about concepts such as 'racism,' 'discrimination', 'sterotypes' and 'prejudice'. Students learnt that our ideas about different groups can come from family, friends and media but it is important to form our own beliefs as we grow older as these beliefs can strongly impact our actions. The faciliators shared real stories about the experiences of their relatives in the Holocaust and how upstanders helped them survive the War. The children were blown away with the impact one person can have to another person's life by calling out discriminatory behaviour.

I would like to officially introduce our Grade 6 tops for 2025...

I can assure you that it was extremely hard to choose which top would win but all students voted anonymously and this was our winner! The design was created by Emma Edwards.

We want to order these as soon as possible, please let me know if you would like to order an additional shirt which will be at the cost of families (the first one is covered by the school.)

Leadership focus

As a school, we have placed emphasise on all our Grade 6s as being leaders of the school, regardless if they are in a specific role or not. We are a TEAM and everyone has a role of play in making the school a safe, respectful and kind place to be. Room 1 had a very thorough discussion around the expectations of our leaders and the type of behaviour that reflects these.  From this discussion, we developed the following agreement:

Adults will be looking out for and rewarding these behaviours to encourage positive choices. We see this as valuable preparation for their big, but very near transition into high school.

School Values

We have been dissecting our new matrix during school values. Each week we focus on a single expectation and model what this looks like in all spaces. This week focused on:

"We use a calm, age-appropriate tone."

Through puppet scenarios set in familiar situations such as the playground, classroom learning, and group work, students discussed:

  • How tone affects feelings and relationships
  • Which responses help solve problems and support teamwork
  • How respectful communication keeps small problems from becoming big ones

Students then stepped into the role of “Respect Actors”, working in groups to perform short role-plays. Each group presented:

1️⃣ A version showing an unhelpful tone

2️⃣ A pause to “reset”

3️⃣ A second version demonstrating respectful communication

We are proud of the thoughtful discussions and teamwork shown by all students as they continue developing the communication skills that help our school community.
