Electric Scooters, Bikes and Safe Travel Through School Grounds

As electric scooters become more common in the community, we would like to remind families of the laws that apply in Victoria and the expectations we have in place at school to ensure everyone’s safety.

E-Scooters and E-Bikes at School

Electric scooters and electric bikes are not permitted at school. Under Victorian law, the minimum age to ride an electric scooter is 16 years, which means they are not appropriate for primary school students.

Riding Within School Grounds

To help keep our school environment safe, bikes, scooters and similar devices must not be ridden within the school grounds.

Once students or parents enter the school gates, all bikes, scooters and similar devices must be dismounted and walked. This expectation applies before and after school when pathways and entrances are particularly busy.

Walking bikes and scooters through the grounds helps protect our younger students, pedestrians and families moving through these shared spaces.

Victorian E-Scooter Rules

Electric scooters are currently permitted for use in public areas in Victoria as part of an extended state trial. Many of the same road rules that apply to bicycles also apply to e-scooters.

Key rules include:

  • Minimum age: Riders must be 16 years or older
  • Where they can be used: Shared paths, bike paths and roads with speed limits 60km/h or less
  • Maximum scooter capability: Must not exceed 25km/h
  • Riding speed: Riders must not exceed 20km/h
  • Single rider only: Passengers are not permitted
  • Helmets: Must be worn at all times
  • Lights: Front and rear lights must be used in low-light conditions or at night
  • Mobile phones: It is illegal to use a mobile phone while riding

Supporting a Safe School Environment

We appreciate families supporting these expectations by reminding children that:

  • E-scooters and e-bikes are not permitted at school
  • Bikes and scooters must be walked once inside the school gates

By working together, we can help ensure our school remains a safe and welcoming environment for all students, families and visitors.
