Building Connection at Home - Supporting Learning and Wellbeing

Children thrive when they feel connected to their families, teachers and school community. When children feel safe, supported and valued, they are more engaged in their learning and experience stronger wellbeing.

Simple everyday moments can make a big difference. Talking about the school day, reading together, sharing stories or asking open questions helps children feel confident, connected and supported in their learning.

This week our school will celebrate Harmony Week which recognises Australia’s cultural diversity and the message that everyone belongs. It is a time to celebrate inclusiveness, respect and belonging within our school community.

As the school’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL), part of my role is working collaboratively with students, families and staff to support student wellbeing. This includes promoting a whole-school approach to mental health and identifying evidence-based strategies that respond to student needs. Strong partnerships between school and home are an important part of helping children feel connected and supported.

The short video below highlights the important role families play in supporting children’s learning and wellbeing through everyday interactions at home. It is presented in a range of languages, and I hope many of our OPS families may have the opportunity to hear the message shared in their home language, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of our community.
