A reminder we have a student free day coming up on Friday 29th November where our teachers will be engaging in Professional Practice learning. Students will not be at school on this day.

STUDENT EXCELLENCE NEWS

This Monday our year 5/6 students from our Student Excellence Program had the opportunity to participate in a state-wide competition in the form of a virtual maths games day organised through the Mathematics Association of Victoria. The competition was based on a points system adjusted to each activity. The activities included a Sudoclue puzzle, Genius Quest and Floating Garbage. The Sudoclue puzzle involved a 4x4 grid with the numbers 1-16 to be placed within. We worked in teams to decode the confusing clues such as clue 2 being a set of around 50 blank pages and clue 4 being backwards. Of all 120 teams across 30 schools, only 2 placed all 16 numbers correctly, one of which was our own team C. The Genius Quest was an adventure worded-maths game that involved story-sequenced problems such as multiplication and estimation - however we did face some technical difficulties. The Floating Garbage challenge was another team based challenge to approximate an overwhelmingly colossal amount of black dots representing floating trash in 10 minutes. When the final scores were announced, our fourth team landed in 52nd place, our third in 19th, another one in 9th and our first team in 2nd place. Monday’s maths day was a great fun for everyone and we hope future years get to enjoy it as much as we did.
