Year 3/4 News

Akshpreet, Leannder and Sean

A busy few weeks in the Year 3/4 area! Here is some of what we have been doing.

Poetry

In Literacy, we are reading and writing different types of poetry: alliteration and tongue twisters, personification, limericks and acrostic poems. Here are some samples from our students:

‘Raihan runs while reading a rare rhyming book with Raitah.’ – Angin, 3/4C
‘Ale’s Ale is an amazing Ale because Ale’s Ale has another Ale!’ - Alessandro, 3 /4A
‘Brownie Batter blizzard’- Zea 3/4B
'There was a guy who always kick.
He accidentally broke a stick.
He went to a train
And saw a plane
And this is a limerick!'
- Angin, 3/4C

Karate Incursion

Two Senseis from The Challenge Centre ran a 30-minute class with us on Tuesday 22 October. The focus was to be confident (Stand Strong) and assertive (Strong Voice). Our 3/4s did an amazing job at listening and following instructions – up, down, left, right, jump! They also practised how to do an ‘up block’ to protect their heads. It was a very active way to start our day and we all had a lot of fun too!

Swimming!

Swimming lessons have been fun for us, the 3/4s! We have really good teachers that help us a lot with our skills. We have learnt a lot the past few days. The instructors have been working hard and have been setting up a lot of challenging activities. We like the way the instructors have put us in different color groups according to level. The 3/4s love swimming. I’m sure the other grades love it too!

Westall Secondary College

On the 30th of October, the Year 4s and 5s went to Westall Secondary College for a 'taster day'. On that day, we picked four classes to attend. We both chose mathematics and sport, Nabiha did coding and Zea did Aviation. This is our opinion of what we liked there.

Our first session was mathematics. During this session we learnt about geometry and also about different types of polygons and their names. The teacher, Mr. Phan showed us a few different polygons and asked us if they were regular or irregular. After that we played a game where we guessed if the picture on the screen was a polygon or not. Then we did a worksheet about geometry. The game was fun but the best part was probably when Mr. Phan gave us candy at the end.

Our second session was P.E. We started with a warm up game called Clumps where you had to run around and when the teacher, Mr. Macintosh yelled out a number, you had to make a group with that many people. We also played a game where you had to pass the ball between your group and a game where you had to partner up with someone and one of you would be cats and one of you would be dogs. If the coach yelled out “cats”, then if you were cats, you would try and get to the line before your partner, who would be a dog, caught you. If the coach yelled “dogs” then it would be the other way around. Afterwards, we played a passing game with seven people in each group and with the same groups we played dodgeball but only one team was throwing the ball and the other team was dodging them.

My favourite session was coding. A student who is very good at coding showed us how to use Tinkercad (although I already knew how to). We also learned how a 3D printer works. The student (I don’t remember his name) asked us if we wanted anything printed and some of the boys asked for Amongus which we all got given one. After the third session, everyone went back to eat lunch at the place where we had recess. In the fourth session, a teacher showed us how to make this fun, but frustrating, game where there’s a wire and a tiny, tiny metal detector, and you had to try and get it to the other side without touching the wire. If you did touch the wire with the metal detector, then it would buzz loudly.

My favourite session of the day was definitely aviation. Aviation is part of the iCreate program which is an additional workshop that happens every Wednesday for two sessions. For those two sessions some older students taught the Year 4’s and 5’s about our chosen subject. During my first session I learnt about planes and flew a really expensive plane simulator. On my first try I crashed, then I flew around a bit more before I had to change to another group. With this other group I played on the same simulator but used a different steering wheel. On my first try I crashed, on my second try, I safely landed the plane. After that it was time for lunch. After lunch I went back to aviation and Sean visited.  Naura and I taught Sean how to fly the plane simulator.

We had a lot of fun at Westall Secondary College. Everything was amazing. We’re really excited to go again next year.
