Hands-on Learning

Daithi Condon

We are thrilled to share the latest updates from our Hands-On Learning Program as we approach the midway point of Term 4! Our students have been busy bringing vibrant energy and creativity to our school grounds and we can't wait to highlight some of the fantastic projects that have been underway.

Assembling the Greenhouse

One of our most exciting initiatives has been collaborating with the VM class to assemble a new greenhouse in the First Nations Yarning Circle and Bush Tucker Gardens! The main aim of this project is to house a farming robot that has been refurbished by Bob Frencham. The foundation of the structure is taking shape beautifully.

Mulching Around the School

Our team has been hard at work mulching around the school to improve aesthetics and promote healthy soil. Our students have shown incredible teamwork and enthusiasm throughout this process, learning valuable lessons about the impact of landscaping on our environment.

Prepping Wood for Cladding

In another ongoing project, our students have been prepping wood from old recycled fence palings. HoL students continue to use this wood on the ongoing cladding of the inside of the shed. This hands-on experience not only teaches essential carpentry skills but also gives our students a sense of pride as they see their work enhancing our shed’s infrastructure.

Mosaic Tiles

We’re excited to highlight a creative project that adds a personal touch to our space; the mosaic tiles boarder at the entrance to the HoL shed. Our students have poured their artistic talents into designing and crafting these beautiful tiles, which brighten the area and create a warm welcome for visitors. This collaborative effort has fostered creativity and teamwork, making it a memorable experience for all involved.

HoL @ LHC Program Tour

We recently hosted representatives from Hands-On Learning and a generous HoL sponsor, FXD, who visited for a tour of the program and our HoL space at LHC. Our students did an excellent job representing themselves, the program and the school, showcasing their hard work and dedication. It was a proud moment for our community!

HoL Celebration and Team Building Excursion

As you can see, the team has been extremely busy and hard-working across the year. One of the four pillars of the Hands on Learning Program is ‘a chance to give back,’ and they have truly succeeded on this front. As a celebration for all the students' hard work and growth we went to Laser Strike in The Basin on Friday 25th October. This was not only a celebration but a great chance to continue working on team building and developing new skills working as a group. The boys were fantastic; showcasing their teamwork skills and in the way they engaged with our instructor Kevin throughout the day.   The Red Team started with a very strong lead and were working well together, however the heroics of Deng Y. in the last game, who was willing to sacrifice himself to ensure his team got the win in that round, was a big moment for the Blues.   It was a spectacular day with lots of laughs and comradery at the forefront.   Well done to all those involved, it was well deserved. You represented not only the program but the school so well, exhibiting all the Lilydale Heights College Values whilst out in the community.
