Darebin Schools NAIDOC Yarning Conference
Over the last few months, a group of Grade 5 students have been participating in pre-learning activities and learning all about indigenous culture and history as part of the Darebin Schools’ NAIDOC Yarning Conference.
As part of this unit of work, the students researched, read stories, and watched various informative videos. Some of the topics included learning about the NAIDOC theme and discussing what it means, reading and understanding stories from the Yoorook Justice Commission, and unpacking songs.
The students also made their own posters that tied in with this year's NAIDOC theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud!’.
To share our learning with other schools across Darebin, the students participated in a day full of learning activities, listening to guest speakers, and taking part in a special smoking ceremony.
A highlight of the day was when our Grade 5 children participated in an activity with 3KND radio station to learn all about what happens at the station and how they interview indigenous artists.
The children have had such a wonderful time sharing their learning and experiences with others over the past few months and are all very excited to share their experiences with their peers and families!
