PE News

Physical Education (PE) in Term 3 comprised of 2 units of work: volleyball and gymnastics.

In volleyball, students practised the skills required to play a game.

  • Foundation students have been practising their throwing and catching using a large ball over a net. They have also practised catching the ball with their hands and tracking the ball with their eyes.
  • Year 1/2 students have been practising a game called Newcomb, which is a throwing and catching version of volleyball.
  • Year 3-6 students have been learning about Volleystars, which is the modified version of volleyball played in the inter-school sport competition. As well as the skills, they have focused on learning the rules of the game, playing against another team and conducting a game without teacher intervention.

In gymnastics, students have been learning about different ways of moving and controlling their bodies. The program aims to improve balance, strength and flexibility. Students have practised holding static, or stationary, positions, using their bodies to create the letters of the alphabet and moving like different animals. They have also practised various balancing positions with a partner that require coordination and communication, as well as more complicated movement sequences requiring three or more people.

The focus for all students in Term 4 is athletics. Each week they will focus on a different event and have a chance to be timed or measured for each.

  • Students in Foundation - Year 2 are introduced to the events using modified equipment.
  • Year 3 – 6 students results will help determine who is selected for the athletics team next year, as well as giving an overview of each student’s speed, strength and agility.
