Principal's Report

Two Significant Women with Modern Messages

Last week, we celebrated the feast day of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint. Born in Melbourne in 1842, Mary devoted her life to helping the poor and providing education to children in rural and disadvantaged communities – a mission that closely reflects the work of the Brigidine Sisters.

Despite facing opposition from Church authorities, Mary remained steadfast in her calling. Her compassion, courage, and deep faith continue to inspire us today. She once said, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” a guiding principle that mirrors our College’s commitment to serving others. This same spirit was evident in our students' last week as they turned their focus to the plight of the homeless, raising awareness about the growing need and pledging support and action within both our College and the wider community.

This Friday, August 15, we observe the Feast of the Assumption, celebrating the moment when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into heaven. The message here is one of hope and promise. In a world often marked by uncertainty, division, and struggle, Mary’s Assumption reminds us that God’s love is stronger than death, and that we are all called to something greater.

Her life of humility, courage, and trust in God challenges us to live with faith and compassion. As we honour her, may we also be inspired to uplift those around us, seek peace, and say “yes” to God’s call in our own lives. We say “yes” to peace when we welcome the stranger, share a meal, show kindness and gratitude, and open our doors and hearts to all in our community.

Next year St Joseph's College will celebrate 140 years in Echuca.

Planning is well under way for this significant event.

We look forward to sharing more details with you in the near future.

God Bless.
