Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

This term, 2B have been engaged in some exciting learning experiences across various subjects.

In writing, they have been exploring the picture book Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, with a focus on the theme of friendship. They have been practising using subordinating conjunctions to write complex sentences, which helps make their writing more detailed and interesting by clearly showing the connections between ideas.

In maths, 2B has enjoyed working with tally marks and picture graphs. They took part in surveying their classmates to collect data, which they then used to create their own graphs. This interactive activity gave them the opportunity to compare their survey results with their original predictions.

In history, students have been investigating the concepts of past, present, and future. They have been sequencing events, days and seasons, as well as comparing their daily activities with a partner. 2B students have been able to identify similarities and differences in daily routines, as well as gaining a better understanding of how time is structured in their own lives and the wider world.

Stage 2

As we make our way into the middle of Term 3, 3F have been exploring a range of concepts and activities!

First things first, we enjoyed transforming ourselves into our favourite wizards, detectives and princesses for our annual Book Week!

In English, we have been exploring poetry from Maxine Beneba Clarke’s ‘The Sound of the Thing’. We have been exploring figurative language such as similes, metaphors and personification as well as exploring other literary techniques such as alliteration and onomatopoeia. Check out some of our shape poems below!

We also made up our own dances to accompany Maxine Beneba Clarke’s poem ‘Tik Tok dance’.

In mathematics, we have been learning about 2D shapes, tessellations and area. We have discovered that square metres don’t have to be the shape of a square and have been testing our estimations for how much space different areas take up!

In art, we have been experimenting with different shapes and patterns to create our own flower gardens and had a go at blending watercolours for the sky background of our treehouse artworks!

We have had a great start to the term and can’t wait to see what learning adventures the rest of the term will hold!

Stage 3

K-6P Visual Art

During this term, K-6P students have had a varied focus on art. In the first two weeks, with the lead-up to Education Week and Roselea 60th Anniversary, they produced some artworks with a link to the 1960s.

Over the following couple of weeks, their artwork had a Winter theme.

Most recently, students were encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills, as they observed and discussed the detail in a variety of well-known artworks. This enables younger students to gain confidence expressing their opinion and provides opportunities for older students to broaden their worldview, recognising traditions and societal issues in some artworks.

Throughout each term, students alternate these art lessons with digital art, exploring a variety of styles and observing as they produce intriguing and sometimes amusing works of art.

Of course, at this time of year, they are currently making a Father’s Day card.
