Head of Year 9 & 10 News
Mr Bill Moloney
Our Year 9 students recently returned from camp at the new Mt Tamborine site. The theme this year was Ubuntu – “I am because we are”, and the program really pushed students to think about teamwork, resilience and personal growth.
From setting up their village while tied together, to working through survival challenges, obstacle courses and the solo night, students were tested in all sorts of ways. Despite some heavy rain and very early mornings, the group showed a lot of persistence and encouraged one another through the tough parts. Many came away with stronger friendships and a better sense of who they are becoming as young adults.
One of the strongest features of the camp was the way students began to step up as leaders. Whether it was helping a classmate through an activity, calling out poor behaviour, or quietly offering encouragement during the solo, we saw lots of examples of maturity and responsibility. It was also pleasing to see students take on the camp motto “the behaviour you walk past is the behaviour you accept” and hold each other to account.
The solo experience, while challenging, proved to be a highlight. For many, it was the first time they had been completely on their own without distractions. Students reflected on their goals, their values, and the type of person they want to be. These moments of stillness and self-reflection are what make the Rite Journey unique, and we hope they carry those lessons back into everyday school life. Some quotes from reflection we did last week.
“At first I thought being tied together would be annoying, but it actually made us communicate better.” – Year 9 student
“The solo was hard but I realised I can do more on my own than I thought.” Year 9 student
“The obstacle course was tough, but we all cheered each other on and that kept us going.” Year 9 student
“I never thought I’d enjoy cooking and cleaning with my friends, but it ended up being one of the best parts.” Year 9 student
“Being around the campfire at night, laughing and talking, made me feel closer to everyone.” Year 9 student
“Even when it poured rain, we just kept going it showed me I’m tougher than I thought.” Year 9 student
“The motto about behaviour really stuck with me. It made me think about the example I set.” Year 9 student
This Friday, our Year 9 Rite Journey students will be walking 19 km from Esk to Toogoolawah to raise awareness and funds for Kids Cancer Research.
In the days leading up, students will be selling gold ribbons under I Block on Wednesday and Thursday at break times. Students will also be visiting staff rooms. We’d love to see staff and students wearing these on Friday in support of the cause. Along the walk there will also be a small bake sale, with money raised going directly to research.
The students have been busy preparing for the event, with different groups taking on specific jobs such as selling ribbons, organising money tins, advertising through flyers, and planning messages of hope to be placed along the trail. Others have been liaising with local businesses and community members to spread awareness. It has been fantastic to see them take ownership of the project and work together with a common goal.
This walk is not only about raising money it’s about empathy, awareness and perspective. Wearing a ribbon or donating a few dollars may seem like a small act, but it carries a powerful message of solidarity. We are looking forward to seeing the entire cohort come together in strength and purpose on Friday. Some quotes from reflections today.
“It feels good to know we’re walking for something bigger than ourselves.” – Year 9 student
“Selling ribbons is a simple job, but if it helps raise awareness it’s worth it.” – Year 9 student
“Nineteen kilometres sounds tough, but we’re ready for the challenge and it wont be as bad as cancer.” – Year 9 student
“I like that the whole school can be part of this by wearing a ribbon.” – Year 9 student
“I’m proud we’re doing something that could make a difference for kids and families.” – Year 9 student
Rite Journey Motto for the Walk: “Every step we take is a step towards hope.”
Next Tuesday, we will once again see our Junior Rugby League boys competing, this time at a 9-a-side carnival on the Sunshine Coast. It’s fantastic to see Toogoolawah State High proudly represented at another big event, and we look forward to sharing an update with you next week on how the boys go.
Looking ahead, Week 3 next Term will see our girls take the field in Toowoomba, competing against a range of schools in another carnival. It’s always encouraging to see students from a smaller school stepping up to compete with and against some of the larger schools in our region. These experiences not only showcase the talent and determination of our students but also build confidence and connection through sport.
Being positioned in the middle of Ipswich, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast, we are always looking for competitions and opportunities that help grow rugby league at Toogoolawah SHS. This central location gives our students the chance to test themselves against a wide range of schools, building pride in our program and paving the way for future growth.
Yours in Rugby League,
Mr Moloney and Ms Lynch
There are just two weeks left for students to reach Level 2. Keep putting in the effort right through to the end – every bit of focus counts.
A big thank you as well to parents and carers who have been keeping in touch with teachers during what has been a tricky time with illnesses going around. Your communication and support have made a real difference, and it’s been encouraging to see how positively this has been managed across the school community.
