OLD BOYS
News from Thomas Jones
Alumni Engagement Officer
Tayshaun Mosby (Class of 2016) is a community engagement officer in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland. Prior to this role, he served as a leading seaman and regional indigenous development coordinator in the Royal Australian Navy, where he worked to build pathways for First Nations communities.
He grew up on Thursday Island, and his strong connection to family, culture and the ocean led him to the navy. A Torres Strait Islander man with family ties to Masig, Erub and Mer islands, Tayshaun enlisted in July 2019, inspired by a proud maritime heritage that includes relatives who worked on pearling luggers.
As a marine technician, he earned a Certificate III in Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanics, completing his training at HMAS Cerberus, the Fleet Support Unit Kuttabul and HMAS Sydney. He later completed his Marine Systems Technician Course at the Navy Training Centre, Randwick Barracks, and gained his Marine Systems Manager Engineering Watch Keeping Certificate.
Much of his previous career was spent at sea as an engineering watch keeper, responsible for monitoring ship systems and conducting maintenance. Flexible working arrangements allowed him to maintain strong connections with Thursday Island, to which he returned regularly to spend time with family and community.
Outside work, Tayshaun continues his service in the Navy Reserve. He enjoys keeping active, spending time with his four-month-old Cocker Spaniel, Benny, and following camping, fishing and hunting content. He is a dedicated Melbourne Storm supporter.

The inaugural Join us in June social event was held last Sunday 7 June with a number of Old Boys from the past 50 years making the most of the opportunity to catch up with former classmates and college staff, both current and retired.
The Old Boys Association hopes that this year’s gathering is the first of many and that Old Boys and staff will continue to gather on the weekend closest to St Marcellin's feast day.
