DEPUTY PRINCIPAL, Learning & Teaching

Dear Parents/Guardians

As we approach the end of semester, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate students on their efforts and reflect on all that we collectively have achieved this semester.

There has been so much to celebrate this term with students being involved in a multitude of programs and events, ranging from the sporting arena to performing arts.  Students enthusiastically took part in the House Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, CGSAV AFL, athletics and hockey as well as winning CGSAV Basketball and Cross Country.  When they weren't on the sporting field, many dedicated and committed students were treading the boards in the wonderful production of Mary Poppins Jr as well as appearing in VCE Drama Performances and Mothers' Day Mass.

Students have also had many opportunities beyond the classroom.  Year 10s have been involved in Community Action and caring for the elderly, community and vulnerable. Others visited the NGV for Eucharistic Art in RE, whilst another group learned about careers in IT through attending a Big Day In at RMIT.   The Italian language students represented themselves well in the Dante Alighieri Poetry competition and Year 9 students enjoyed their Languages Day this week.

As part of the Synergy Program, 9 Barak and 9 Mackillop became social entrepreneurs and enjoyed a visit from the Speaker of the House and our Federal Member, Sarah Witty who visited their market stalls and spoke with students. Year 9s also enjoyed listening to Alice Pung, renowned Australian author, visiting the MCG and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Meanwhile, Year 7 and 8 students were getting to know students from Simonds College and enjoyed a STEM Challenge with them supported by the Year 10 Maths Committee. We also have many students taking advantage of extracurricular clubs such as R.A.G.E Book Club, Knitting Club, Art Academy, Justice Group, Choir, STEM Club, Games Club to name a few and have been part of different excursions related to these.

I hope that every student can feel proud of what they have achieved this semester.  For those who feel they haven’t quite met their own expectations, the holiday break offers a valuable chance to pause, reflect and think about how they might approach next semester differently.

I encourage students and parents to thoroughly review their semester report when it is released next week, celebrate successes and begin setting some goals for next semester. Their subject teachers and Mentor Group teachers will continue to support students in achieving these goals.

Acceleration

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind Year 9 and 10 students of the requirement of achieving an 85% average across their subjects if they would like to be considered for accelerating into a VCE subject in 2027.

If you have any questions or wish to provide any feedback, please feel free to contact me.
