Teaching And Learning

This semester, our high ability writing program has been working with identified Year 4/5/6 students. As a part of this program students work with Mrs Kelly once a week to extend their writing skills.

The program this semester has focused on poetry - reading, analysing critiquing and writing all sorts of poetry! Some of the language features we have focused on are using senses in our descriptions, figurative language and using punctuation for effect.

Another major focus of the program this semester has been the giving and receiving of feedback in order to revise and improve their drafted writing. Often, students can be hesitant to rework their drafts, which means they are not reaching their full potential when writing. Teaching students that editing and revising is a key part of the writing process, has been a valuable experience.

Please enjoy some of these snippets of poetry from their first drafts! The final, edited poems will be included in the newsletter and the student-created 2026 Lucas Yearbook.

The trees whisper in the wind.

It sounds like something everybody should hear.

A message to all. A message that saves the planet.

They told me, “Hurting us will hurt you.”

So I listened and sent it out as a letter of peace.

-Korben (Year 4)

Life we lived and left.

We cherish the memories,

until we lose them.

-Ruby (Year 4)

The river looked like a snake,

uncurling from a dream,

to catch a tiny mouse.

-Paityn (Year 5)

Tokyo

Rain falls down and people flood the streets.

Booming noises and loud voices. So many hands and so many feet.

Smells run through the air. Scrumptious, salty, saucy smells.

-Bree (Grade 6)
