Supporting Healthy Gaming Over the Holidays

As we move into the school holidays, many young people will naturally be spending more time gaming. While gaming can be a fun and social activity, offering relaxation, connection and enjoyment, it’s important to help students keep a healthy balance during the long break.

Headspace has released a helpful fact sheet highlighting the signs that gaming may be becoming unhealthy, such as staying up late, irritability when unable to play, skipping meals, reduced social time, headaches, tired eyes or difficulty managing time. These signs can be particularly relevant during the holidays, when routines become more flexible.

The resource also provides practical strategies to help young people keep gaming in balance, including:

• Setting screen-free times during the day

• Keeping a consistent sleep routine• Taking regular breaks to stretch and move

• Encouraging a mix of hobbies and offline activities

• Using gaming as something to enjoy after responsibilities are completed

If you notice that gaming is impacting your child’s mood, sleep or relationships, it can be helpful to have a gentle conversation and encourage support from a trusted adult, GP or wellbeing service.

Support for 2026 School Camp Costs – Saver Plus Program

The Gap State High School is pleased to share a valuable opportunity for families through Saver Plus, a government-funded matched savings and financial education program delivered by The Smith Family.

As many families begin planning for next year’s schooling or prepare to transition into new stages of education, Saver Plus is here to help manage the associated costs. The program supports eligible families with school-related expenses through matched savings and free financial education workshops.

Saver Plus

Saver Plus is a government-funded financial inclusion program that supports eligible participants with up to $500 in matched savings to help cover their child’s education costs. Alongside the financial support, participants gain valuable budgeting skills that contribute to long-term financial well-being.

As families prepare for new school year levels, Saver Plus can assist with a wide range of education-related expenses, including:

  • Devices and technology
  • Excursions and camps
  • Subject-specific resources
  • And many other approved costs

Families can also enquire directly by calling 1300 610 355 or by clicking the ‘Enquire Now’ button on The Smith Family website under the Saver Plus financial literacy program. A Savings Coach will then be in touch for a friendly chat.
