Grade 2

Welcome back to a new school year! We are very excited to welcome our Grade 2 students and families back after the break and are looking forward to a positive and productive start to the year. We have already enjoyed getting to know the students and settling into classroom routines.  Don't forget to check Compass for important updates throughout the year and Seesaw for Portfolio tasks! English

In Literacy, our students are revisiting the phonemes and graphemes they learned last year in their Little Learners Love Literacy programmes. Both grade 1s and 2s will be reviewing the long vowel sounds and all the ways that each sound can be spelt. We will build their confidence to decode these quickly so they are able to read more fluently. 

In Writing, students are getting creative by expanding simple sentences to share what they are learning about different countries and cultures in our term unit. They will use who, what, and where questions to draw out more information and add interesting details, helping them extend their sentences and build richer, more engaging texts for the reader. This process not only strengthens their writing skills but also deepens their understanding of the content, as they think carefully about the people, places, and events they are describing. Students will then compile their work into their own flip books, creating a meaningful way to share their learning.

Maths 

Number: In Maths, students are exploring place value up to 1,000, developing a strong understanding of ones, tens, and hundreds. They are practising reading, writing, and comparing numbers, and using strategies such as partitioning, renaming, and regrouping to solve problems. Students are also investigating patterns in numbers, including skip counting, identifying odd and even numbers, and recognising number sequences, which helps them see the relationships between numbers and develop logical thinking skills.

Non-Number: In non-number topics, students are exploring data and statistics by collecting, organising, and interpreting information in a variety of ways, such as simple graphs and tables. They are learning to ask questions about data, describe what it shows, and draw conclusions. In addition, students are studying time, focusing on calendars to understand days, weeks, months, and seasons, and connecting these concepts to real-life events such as birthdays, holidays, and special school activities.

Humanities and Science

We are excited to begin our study into different cultures and countries. Students will explore what makes each place unique, including their languages, foods, festivals, and native animals. Through this learning, we will celebrate diversity and help students develop curiosity and respect for the world around them.
