Prep Overview of Learning

The Prep staff welcome all parents and children to the start of the school year, especially those families beginning their journey at Rosanna Golf Links Primary School. We look forward to an exciting, successful year together full of learning, friendship and fun. The classroom teaching staff and room numbers are as follows:

This Term's Learning in Prep

 

English

English is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening.

 

In Reading and Viewing, students will: 

• develop and build on their understanding of how texts work, including which way to hold and open a book, reading from top to bottom, left to right and identifying letters, words and sounds within a text 

• connect their own experiences with the texts they read 

• recognise and say the most common sounds for the letters of the alphabet

 

In Writing, students will: 

• draw pictures to show meaning 

• develop the understanding that spoken sounds and words can be written down 

• begin developing appropriate written formation of upper and lower case letters

 

In Speaking and Listening, students will learn to: 

• listen to and respond appropriately to others 

• share about events that have happened to them with their classmates and peers

 

Mathematics

Mathematics is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement, Space and Statistics.

 

In Number and Algebra, students will learn to: 

• make, name and record numbers to 10 

• count groups of objects and compare and order their size 

• sort familiar objects into groups and explain their reasons for their groupings

 • copy, continue and create patterns

 

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics), students will learn to: 

 • compare objects including length, capacity, mass and duration

• sequence days of the week and times of the day

• recognise, describe, sort and create familiar shapes

• describe the position and location of themselves and objects in relation to other people

• collect, sort and compare data represented by objects and images

 

Humanities and Science

In Term One, Prep students will complete a unit on ‘Identity’. They will find out about their family history & learn more about themselves. This unit covers learning areas from the Humanities curriculum, including History and Geography.

 

The key questions that students will explore are: 

  • What makes me an individual? 
  • How am I the same and different to my peers?
  • How can I learn about the past?
