Year 2 2026 – BYODD Program Update

Over the past few years, our school has trialled the Bring Your Own Designated Device (BYODD) Program in Year 2. This has involved inviting students to bring a Chromebook from home for use during learning time at school.

After reviewing the trial, and considering current research on child development and technology use, we have decided not to continue the BYODD Program for Year 2 in 2026.

Research indicates that children around the age of eight benefit most from hands-on, play-based and collaborative learning experiences, with limited reliance on personal devices. At this age, students are still developing essential fine-motor, social and self-regulation skills. Personal devices can create distractions, reduce opportunities for face-to-face interaction, and place additional responsibility on younger learners who may not yet be ready to manage a device independently. Maintaining a shared-device model at this age helps ensure that technology is purposefully integrated, guided by teachers, and developmentally appropriate.

There is no need to purchase a Chromebook for your child for 2026. Students will participate in the BYODD Program when they enter Year 3 in 2027, which aligns with their growing independence and readiness to manage their own device.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.
