What's On In Foundation

Garden Fun!
What a fabulous time of year to head into our garden! The Spring rain is greatly appreciated… but it also means our gloves had to be put on to pull out hundreds of weeds! Foundation students are becoming quite skilled at using garden tools to help dislodge weeds from the roots. They then love to feed those pesky weeds to the always hungry chooks!
Students also had the important job of harvesting broccoli seed pods from mature plants. With a twist and a tug, seed pods were carefully placed into a basket ready for the drying process to begin. Ashley then explained to us the best season that we can plant them next year, so more crunchy and delicious broccoli can grow!
Measuring in Maths
In Maths, students had a wonderful time exploring all kinds of informal tools that we can use to measure. Connecting to our Under the Sea unit, they began by drawing two fish - one long and one shorter.
After creating their fish, students measured them using blocks, linking rings, and dominoes. Then came the exciting part of introducing a formal measuring tool…the ruler! Everyone was eager to give it a try and took great care to line their fish up right at the ‘0’.
Once all the measuring was complete, each student chose one of their fish, and together we ordered them from shortest to longest. It was a fantastic, hands-on way to explore measurement!
