Year 3 & 4
Around our level
This week, our Grade 3 and 4 students have jumped into an exciting real-world maths project all about money management and budgeting. With Christmas just around the corner, students were challenged to plan a festive meal—breakfast, lunch or dinner—using a fictitious $200 gift card as their spending limit.
To complete the task, students explored a range of online and paper catalogues from Coles, Woolworths and Aldi. They compared prices, checked value for money, and learned to make thoughtful purchasing decisions—just like adults do when planning a big holiday meal!

Each student created a full Christmas menu that included:
An entrée
A main course
A dessert
They then worked out a detailed budget for each part of the meal, ensuring the total cost stayed within the $200 limit. Their meal also needed to feed a family of four, which encouraged them to think about serving sizes, quantities, and cost-effective choices.

This hands-on activity blended maths, creativity, and practical life skills. Students showed fantastic problem-solving skills and enthusiasm as they built festive menus that were both delicious and budget-friendly.
Well done to all our budding chefs and savvy shoppers!
