OGA Career Connections inspires Year 12 students
On Wednesday 27 May, Year 12 students attended the Old Girtonians’ Association (OGA) Career Connections event during VCE Motivate. Organised by the OGA, the event welcomed three old Girtonians and a member of the Girton community, who shared their career journeys and provided valuable insights into life after school.
Evan Jenkins (Class of 2013) returned to Girton to speak about his career in the civil construction industry. After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Surveying, Evan gained experience in a variety of roles before progressing into civil construction. He is now a Director and partner at DPJ Civil, where he leads projects and remains connected to the profession through his involvement with research and thesis work at RMIT.
Liam Radford (Class of 2018) shared his pathway into the legal profession. Following the completion of Arts and Law (Honours) degrees at Monash University and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, Liam gained experience in property law before transitioning into family law. He now works as a lawyer, enjoying the diversity of court appearances, client work and legal research.
Erin Collins (Class of 2021) spoke about her journey into medicine. After completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) at La Trobe University in Bendigo, she is now in her second year of the Doctor of Medicine through the University of Melbourne's Rural Clinical School in Shepparton. Alongside her studies, Erin has gained experience in a range of healthcare and education roles, contributing to her development as a future medical practitioner.
Holly Andrews, a Bendigo-based physiotherapist and President of the Girton Parents and Friends Association, shared her experiences working across both the public and private healthcare sectors. Following the completion of a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University, Holly worked at Bendigo Health and St John of God Hospital before spending ten years teaching at La Trobe University. She now operates her own private physiotherapy practice, combining clinical work with the challenges and rewards of business ownership.
The OGA Career Connections event provided Year 12 students with valuable perspectives on the many pathways available after school. Through their diverse experiences, the speakers highlighted the importance of remaining open to opportunities, embracing challenges and recognising that careers are often shaped by lifelong learning and unexpected experiences.
