THINK TILE BEFORE LIFTING

ONE POSTER PER CLASSROOM
ONE POSTER PER CLASSROOM

Why is this important? – Think TILE Before Lifting

Manual handling injuries can occur during everyday tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing or moving equipment. Before undertaking any manual handling task, take a moment to think TILE:

  • Task – What needs to be done and for how long?
  • Individual – Do I have the skills, capacity and focus to complete the task safely?
  • Load – Is the item too heavy, awkward or difficult to move alone?
  • Environment – Is the area safe, well-lit and free from hazards?

By considering these factors before lifting, staff can reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries, helping to keep everyone safe and healthy at work. This will also be added o our OHS Risk Register.

Why is the Student Supervision Reference important?

1. Supports Student Safety

  • Immediately identifies students who require high levels of supervision.
  • Reduces the risk of students being left unsupervised or supported by unfamiliar staff.

2. Assists Relief and New Staff

  • Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs), Education Support staff and visitors may not know every student.
  • Provides a quick reference to:
    • Student identity
    • Familiar staff members
    • Key support requirements
    • Where to find detailed information

3. Reduces Risk to Students and Staff

  • Helps prevent:
    • Absconding/wandering
    • Behaviour escalation
    • Student distress when supported by unfamiliar staff
    • Inconsistent responses from different staff members

Our Operational Folder is maintained to support the safe, consistent, and effective day-to-day running of your classroom. It provides staff with quick access to important operational information, procedures, emergency processes, contacts, and site-specific guidance to support communication, compliance, and continuity across the school. The folder also helps ensure that all staff, including CRTs and new staff members, can easily access key information required to maintain a safe and organised learning environment. Please keep this up to date at least once per term.

The Classroom Safety & Readiness (CSR) Checklist is an important part of keeping our classrooms safe, organised, and ready for learning each day. Having this at the forefront of our minds helps us take a proactive approach to safety, identify concerns early, and support the wellbeing of both students and staff. It is also an important compliance requirement that demonstrates our shared responsibility and commitment to following OHS and duty of care procedures.
