AUTHOR VISIT:  PIP HARRY

Junior School students were captivated on Monday by a visit from acclaimed author Pip Harry, best known for August and Jones. Pip shared insights into her writing process, explaining how experiences from her own life have inspired the stories she creates for young readers. Students were fascinated to learn about the journey from idea to publication and left feeling inspired to explore their own creativity through writing.

READERS' CUP CHALLENGE

Congratulations to Xander Playle, Oliver Boyd, Josh Craig, Emile Roth and Yannick Amith on their participation in the Readers’ Cup Challenge held at St Aloysius’ on Wednesday.

The Readers’ Cup is a team-based literary competition that celebrates a love of reading, collaboration and critical thinking. Students read a selection of novels over several weeks before competing against other schools in a quiz-style format that tests their knowledge, comprehension and attention to detail. Each round focused on a different book, with teams answering ten questions per round. The competition is designed to encourage students to engage deeply with quality literature while working together under pressure.

This year marked the inaugural Readers’ Cup Challenge in New South Wales, with only six schools invited to participate. Our students represented the school with enthusiasm, teamwork and impressive literary knowledge, ultimately finishing in an outstanding fourth place.

We congratulate Queenwood on their victory and commend our team for embracing this exciting new competition with such dedication and spirit. We are extremely proud of their achievement and look forward to future opportunities to participate.

PEER MENTORING BOWLING AFTERNOON

Our students involved in the Peer Mentoring program are looking forward to tomorrow afternoon's bowling activity.  This is a fun, relaxed opportunity to connect with their mentors from the Senior School.  Through friendly competition and shared experiences, students will have the opportunity to strengthen relationships, build trust and enjoy spending time together outside the classroom environment.

ST GABRIEL’S VISIT

Today, our student leaders in Years 5 and 6 are visiting our friends at St Gabriel’s School in Castle Hill as part of our new partnership. We look forward to welcoming students from St Gabriel’s for a day of fun and play at Oxford Falls in Term 3.

YEAR 6 MATHS MEGAMINDS

In preparation for the ASX Challenge next term, students in Year 6 Maths Megaminds delved into the world of ratios. We looked at what a company's price to earnings ratio (P/E Ratio) is and how this helps investors spot value and future growth. Students researched the P/E ratio of common stocks and contrasted their trailing and forward P/E Ratios to highlight future growth potential. As seen in this image, some companies were trading at astronomical multiples.

Junior Athletics Carnival

The 2026 Junior Athletics Carnival, held at SOPAC, was a tremendous success and a memorable day for all involved. We were truly blessed with outstanding weather, providing the perfect setting for a full day of competition, participation, and celebration.

Participation levels across all age groups were exceptionally high, which was fantastic to see. The enthusiasm from students was evident from the very first event through to the final races, with plenty of smiles and a strong sense of encouragement and house pride on display throughout the day. The positive spirit shown by all competitors and supporters made the carnival a truly enjoyable experience.

There were some excellent performances both on the track and in the field, highlighting the talent and determination of our students. Many individuals achieved outstanding results, but just as importantly, it was the collective effort and willingness to have a go that stood out most.

The competition for the overall House Championship was incredibly close. In what proved to be one of the highest-scoring carnivals in recent years, only 10 points separated first and second place, a testament to the level of participation and commitment from all houses.

Congratulations to RICE, who were crowned the 2026 Junior Athletics Carnival Champions. This marks a well-deserved victory, and reflects the consistent effort and determination shown by their students on the day. I again extend a sincere thank you to all the staff and parents for the guidance and leadership on the day.

Further details regarding the squad training will be sent to nominated students. From the training a team will be chosen to attend the invitational and IPSHA carnival. See below for a summary of training details

CIS Cross Country

CIS Cross Country will take place in Week 10. While it may feel like some time has passed since our College Cross Country event, one athlete has continued to work tirelessly behind the scenes, maintaining his dedication and commitment to improvement.

We are proud to share that Lachlan Swadling will be representing both IPSHA and SPX at the upcoming event in Blacktown. The course will provide a significant challenge, with some of the best junior runners competing for the opportunity to progress to the NSWPSSA level.

Lachlan’s consistent effort and determination have been outstanding, and this opportunity is a testament to his hard work. We wish him all the very best and look forward to hearing how he performs on the day.

Saturday Sport

As we head into another weekend of sport, we would like to take a moment to remind all players and families of the IPSHA Code of Conduct, which we at SPX uphold to the highest standard.

At SPX, sport is an opportunity to build character, teamwork and respect. We expect all players and spectators to demonstrate this through their behaviour at all times. This includes showing respect to team officials, referees, opposition players, and fellow spectators.

To support a positive and enjoyable environment for everyone:

  • Parents and spectators should not approach or question referees, coaches, or team officials at any stage.

  • Any concerns, particularly those relating to safety, should be directed to me so they can be addressed appropriately.

  • Please do not enter the field of play at any time, and ensure you remain behind any ropes or barriers in place.

  • Allow space for coaches and players to manage the game and learning experience independently.

Our Saturday sport program relies heavily on the support of referees, volunteers, teachers and coaches. By working together and modelling respectful behaviour, we help create an environment where all boys can enjoy their sport and perform at their best.

Thank you to the many families who consistently contribute to such a positive atmosphere, it is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing about another weekend of great effort, sportsmanship and performance.

SPX Holiday Football Camp

A final reminder about the Football holiday camp for our players to further develop their skills through the Coerver Football Camp. This program offers a fantastic environment for boys to build confidence, refine their technical ability, and deepen their understanding of the game, all under the guidance of experienced and engaging coaches.

Programs like this are incredibly valuable in supporting each player’s development, not only improving their skills, but also fostering independence, decision-making, and a genuine enjoyment of football. It’s a great way for boys to challenge themselves in a positive and supportive setting alongside other like-minded players.

We strongly encourage families to consider this opportunity, as it can have a meaningful impact on your son’s growth both on and off the field.

The sun was shining, the football was great fun and it was a winning weekend for the Socceroos - who could ask for more?

Again, a huge thank you to all those who contributed to a great day of football at Oxford Falls - whether you baked cakes, turned sausages, served food or coached our boys. Rugby

Over the past few weeks, St Pius X Rugby players have been involved in a wide variety of opportunities. Over the long weekend, Oscar H, Jack C, Tommy K, Lachie S,

(Long weekend competition). Furthermore, four students represented SPX at the CIS Rugby trials last Wednesday. Congratulations to Lachie D, Nate F and Noah F on their selections in the team – a true reward of their dedication and consistent effort in the sport.

A gentle reminder for all parents and students: it is an expectation that students bring all gear to all rugby trainings, including mouthguard, boots, training shirts, rugby shorts and rugby socks. I look forward to seeing vast improvement in this area for the remainder of the season.

This weekend, we look ahead to the final matches of the term, with the Prep’s taking on Cranbrook, and the 11A’s and B’s playing Waverley.

The recent State Cup competition held over the long weekend provided an exciting showcase of junior rugby talent, and it was particularly pleasing to see such strong representation from SPX students across a number of teams. A large group of students from Years 5 and 6 took part in the tournament, proudly representing clubs including Gordon, Northern Suburbs (Norths), and Manly.

Representing their respective clubs with pride, our SPX boys embraced the opportunity to test themselves, support their teammates, and enjoy the spirit of competition that events like the State Cup foster.

The strong participation numbers alone are a fantastic sign for the future of rugby at SPX. With so many students actively involved and performing well at representative levels, there is a clear pathway of talent continuing to develop within our junior ranks. Experiences such as these will no doubt play a significant role in shaping the next generation of SPX rugby players.

CIS Selection Achievement

Last week, four SPX students Jack Cross, Nate Fifita, Noah Fifita, and Lachlan Doyle attended the highly competitive CIS Rugby Trials. All four boys performed exceptionally well, progressing through a demanding selection process to earn places in the Possibles and Probables matches, an outstanding achievement in itself.

We are proud to share that Nate, Noah, and Lachlan were ultimately selected in the final CIS team. From available records, this marks the first time in SPX history that three players have been chosen at the CIS junior school level, an exceptional milestone for the boys, the College, and the continued growth of SPX Rugby.

This achievement is a testament to the commitment, talent, and hard work of these students, as well as the strength of the rugby program developing within our junior ranks. We congratulate all four players on their efforts and wish Nate, Noah, and Lachlan the very best as they prepare for the PSSA Championships later this year.

Trytime Rugby Camp – School Holiday Opportunity

A fantastic opportunity is available for all Junior School students these upcoming school holidays with the Trytime Rugby Camp. This program provides a fun, engaging, and professionally run environment where players of all abilities can develop their skills, build confidence, and grow their love for the game.

The camp is an excellent chance for students to receive high-quality coaching, sharpen core rugby fundamentals, and enjoy playing alongside other enthusiastic young players. Whether new to the game or already involved in a team, every student will benefit from the supportive and energetic atmosphere that Trytime consistently delivers.

For our current SPX rugby players, this is a particularly valuable opportunity to continue building skills and match fitness ahead of the final three rounds of the winter season in Term 3. Maintaining momentum during the break will place players in a strong position to finish the season well and contribute positively to their teams.

All Junior School students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. For further details and registration information, please refer to the link. https://www.trytimerugby.com/camps

AFL

Despite a challenging lead-up with injuries and illness impacting weekly consistency, the Junior School AFL side continued to show impressive growth in their match against St Aloysius’ last weekend. While the result (0.0 (54) – 0.0 (72)) did not fall in our favour, the effort and cohesion displayed by the group was a real highlight. The boys demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and a strong team-first attitude, with players stepping into unfamiliar roles and competing hard across all four quarters. Notable contributions from Andrew He and Josh Wroblewski reflected the team’s commitment and improving confidence. Most pleasing has been the steady development of the group throughout the season, with each week showing greater connection and understanding despite the disruptions, an encouraging sign for their continued progress.

Chess

The second-last round of the chess season proved to be another challenging week for our teams, with the C Team securing our only overall victory. Despite some tough matches, there were several standout individual performances. Congratulations to Sam W (A Team), Sam L (B Team), and Ted, Sunny, and Joey (C Team), who all recorded impressive wins for their respective teams.

As we head into the final round of the season, we congratulate all players on their commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Final Round Fixtures

  • A Team vs Riverview (Away)
  • B Team vs Redlands (Home)
  • C Team vs Reddam House (Home)

We wish all teams the very best for their final matches of the season.
