Movement Matters: Our "Munch & Move" Inspired Fundamental Movement Program

At Hampshire House, our children enjoy a dedicated Fundamental Movement Skills programme, inspired by the evidence-based “Munch & Move” initiative from NSW Health. Munch & Move supports both healthy eating and active play in the preschool years. These daily intentional learning experiences develop essential movement skills, by focusing on a different gross movement skill each week.

Fundamental Movement Skills are the building blocks of physical activity, involving coordinated use of large muscle groups. These skills do not develop automatically and must be taught, practised, and refined. Our programme focuses on eight key movements, with a weekly emphasis on one or more skills integrated into play, music sessions, outdoor activities, and games. The eight movements arerunning, jumping, hopping, galloping, skipping, throwing, catching, and kicking.

By intentionally building these skills each week, our children gain repeated opportunities to explore, practise, and master these in a supportive environment. Activities are adapted to suit varying abilities across the different age groups and are linked to our children’s interests for maximum engagement.

The benefits are wide-ranging. Our children develop greater strength, coordination, balance, and fitness, supporting healthy physical growth and reducing sedentary habits. Movement also enhances cognitive skills such as concentration and problem-solving, while boosting confidence, resilience, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing. Early mastery of these skills fosters lifelong physical literacy, making children more likely to enjoy sports, play, and active lifestyles as they grow.

By nurturing these skills early in life, we are laying firm foundations for a healthy, active lifestyle that will benefit our children for many years to come.
