A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Heights Campus
It has been another busy and productive fortnight in the Middle Learning Centre. Students have continued to demonstrate a positive attitude towards their learning, showing resilience, curiosity and a willingness to challenge themselves across all curriculum areas.
In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension skills by learning how to identify the main idea across a variety of text types, including narrative, information and persuasive texts. They have been using supporting details and evidence to deepen their understanding of what they read.
Narrative writing has been the focus for the MLC at the beginning of Term 3. Students have been exploring the structure of narratives and investigating a range of literary devices that authors use to engage their readers. They are beginning to apply these techniques to strengthen their own writing.
Students have been building confidence in Mathematics by using their mental subtraction strategies before applying the written subtraction algorithm to solve increasingly challenging problems. They have also been using mathematical language to explain their thinking and justify their strategies.
In Projects, students concluded their previous unit with a fantastic excursion to the Immigration Museum, where they explored Australia's migration stories and connected their classroom learning to real-world experiences. They have now begun their new unit on Local Government, investigating how councils support our communities through the services and facilities they provide.
In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students are learning about help-seeking behaviours and developing the confidence to recognise when they need support and identify trusted adults and strategies that can help them overcome challenges.
A reminder to families that daily reading at home plays an important role in building fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Even 10–15 minutes of reading each evening makes a significant difference to students' learning.
As we move toward the second half of the term, we look forward to seeing our students continue to grow in confidence, challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements. We appreciate the ongoing support of our families and are excited to watch our students continue to shine.
