Highlights from Heights
It has been another busy and rewarding fortnight at SRPS, with exciting learning opportunities for our students.
On Sunday, students from the Senior Learning Centre (SLC) across both campuses had the exciting opportunity to attend an AFL game at the MCG. A total of 62 students took part, enjoying the atmosphere and experiencing one of Melbourne’s most iconic sporting venues. Beyond being a wonderful day out, the excursion supported students to develop their understanding of teamwork, community participation and positive sportsmanship. All students and teachers had a fantastic time, although Mr Roberts in particular enjoyed watching his team (the Richmond Tigers) win the game!
The winners of our NAIDOC Week Deadly Doors Competition have been announced! It was an incredibly close competition, with every class creating an impressive and meaningful display. After careful consideration, our Heights School Captains selected FA and 5/6B as this year’s winners. Congratulations to both classes, and well done to everyone who contributed their creativity and effort!
While students did not attend school on Friday 31 July, staff were busy learning and working together. The day focused on strengthening our approach to explicit teaching and ensuring that the learning experiences provided in classrooms each day are aligned with current research about how students learn. This professional learning supports consistent, best-practice across SRPS and ensures that all staff are equipped to provide every student with high-quality learning and support.
While our staff are committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities, students need to be at school each day to benefit fully from them. Regular attendance is essential for students to make progress and feel connected to their classmates and school community. Last year, the average SRPS student was absent for 19.5 days over the whole schoool ye, almost an entire month of learning. Missing this much school significantly affect a child’s learning, routines and friendships.
We want every student at school every day. When a student is absent, the school may call home to check in; this is an important part of supporting our students and families. If your family is experiencing challenges with attendance, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher so we can work together to help.
