Education in Faith

A snapshot of RE Learning in 1/2GC

In 1/2GC, we are learning about the various parts of the Mass. By deepening our understanding of the events and rituals that take place during Mass, we can gain a greater appreciation for the experience. Our class recognises that the Mass consists of four main parts: the Introductory Rite, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the Concluding Rite. Here is what we have learned so far:

The Introductory Rite:

Harvey: We sing songs.

Will: We might be saying sorry in a prayer when we haven't been good.

Hamish: Father welcomes us.

Liturgy of the Word:

Sebastian: We listen to the Bible.

Louis: We listen to the Old Testament and the Letters.
Oscar Y: Father reads the Bible.
Isla: The priest reads the Bible, the Old and the New Testament and we listen to the letters.

Liturgy of the Eucharist:

Audrey: We say the Our Father and sing songs.

Freddie: It is when they bring up the bread and wine.
Nora: There is the sign of the cross and we say the Our Father. We do some singing and the sign of peace.
Concluding Rite:
Juliette: We stand up and sing. The priest tells everybody to have a good day.
Summer: We sing songs and the priest says, ‘the Mass has ended.’
Jaden: We finish off with a prayer.
Thomas:  We finish with a song. The priest says, ‘the Mass has ended.’
Lucas: The priest walks to the end of the altar and then he says, ‘Go in peace.’

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Jesus said to the crowds, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time; he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’

He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’

Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.
