DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION UNVEILS NEW TEACHING AND LEARNING MODEL TO MAKE BEST PRACTICE COMMON PRACTICE IN THE EDUCATION STATE
At Surfside we were thrilled to see Teaching and Learning on the front page of The Age and hear the Minister for Education Ben Carroll unveil that from 2025 an updated Teaching and Learning model will be implemented in all government schools across the state with explicit teaching at its core.
It states that all students from Prep to Grade 2 will be taught using a systematic, synthetic phonics approach as part of their reading programs, with a minimum of 25 minutes daily explicit teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness. This becomes part of a comprehensive reading program that also includes explicit teaching of oral language, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension. (refer to the Minister for Education's media release below)
This is an exciting announcement for Surfside, as it validates the AMAZING learning and work our staff and students have been a part of over the last 5 years. We hope that you have been reading our Teaching and Learning page throughout the year to gain more knowledge and understanding of what has been happening in each and every classroom. What the Department of Education has released is only the tip of the iceberg and we thank all of our teaching, education support and leadership staff for continuing to show innovation, a passion for learning, and adapting their approach to evidence-based practices that enable each and every child the best opportunity to learn.
We continue to learn on this journey and have a long way to go, but the whole Surfside community should be proud of the work that has been completed so far and be excited about the work that is on the horizon.
Please take the time to watch these short videos of a couple of our students who can discuss what happens in our classrooms each and every day.
You all ROCK Surfside!!
