Food Scrap Friday Update

A big thank you to our family helpers, volunteers, students and staff for supporting our compost initiative by bringing in food scraps on a Friday. Food Scrap Friday is a great initiative to reduce landfill and provide an opportunity for food waste to be used in a sustainable way. As a school we continue to grow in this area and as we reach the half way mark of the year we are on target for another record breaking year with Surfside reducing landfill by collecting 1,996.5kgs of food waste. Keep up the great work Surfside families and keep supporting our volunteer crew!!

Thank you Kasey and Jess Tattersall

This week, on the 12th of June, Kasey and Jess Tattersall (the designers of our Year 6 polos and jackets for this year) came for a visit to our school. We had a meeting with them and had a quick brainstorm on the new polo design for the upcoming year 6's in 2025. They loved how their design looked on the jackets and wanted to take photos of the connections captain’s modelling them. They said they knew the perfect place, so we wandered down to the aboriginal meeting place that their mum, Abbey designed. This space also displays a beautiful mural that she painted with the help of some students.

We want to thank Kasey and Jess so much for designing our 2024 year 6 t-shirt’s and jackets, we think they’re outstanding!

In and Out of the Classroom

Year 6 Incursion - Earth Ed - Sphero's Coding

The Year 6's developed their skills around coding with an interactive incursion that applied the skills of digital technologies, programming and mathematics.

Year 3 Science Dome

Year 3 students were fascinated by the visual presentation and interesting facts during the Science Discovery Dome incursion last week. They learned about day and night and the planets in our solar system. It felt like we were on a trip to space.

Here are some student reflections:

"Learning what planets we can see in the sky at night" Bridget M21

"I like it when the  sun looked like it was going to fall on us" Bonnie M21

"My favourite part was when we got to see some planets up close because you got to see all the little details" Nellie M22

"I enjoyed everything, but my highlight was when we lay down and we watched the roof" Eden M22

"I liked it when we explored the planets" Liam M23

"I liked how the entryway worked and it felt like a portal, and when the asteroid fell onto our heads" Ivy M23

"I like when Nick showed us how to identify the different seasons on different planets " Maya M24

"I liked seeing a close-up of the different shapes on the moon" Austin M24

Year 1 Chemical Science Incursion

The Year 1's visited the Surfside STEAM Learning Centre. The students unleashed their inner scientists and had a blast learning about different chemical reactions. The students had the opportunity to engage in various experiments and demonstrations, allowing them to witness the magic of chemical reactions firsthand. From colourful reactions to exciting transformations, they explored the wonders of chemistry in an interactive and memorable way.
