Music Recital

Soren Swan, Senior Music Representative

Last week, the Year 11 and Year 12 students took to the stage for their respective Unit 1 and Unit 3 Music recitals. These performances were a testament to our hard work, translating many hours of practice (and maybe a few meltdowns) into an impressive musical performance for friends and family.

Each of us had to rehearse and present performances demonstrating technical control, musical expression, and stylistic understanding across at least two pieces, whether solo or in an ensemble.

Here at Donvale, we are very blessed to have such a supportive music team. Huge shoutout to our amazing music teachers, accompanists, and staff who make these events possible. Their guidance and encouragement have been crucial in helping us prepare, especially for the Year 12s who are gearing up for their end-of-year performance exam.

As both a performer and an audience member, I can confirm these recitals are of great value. It was inspiring to see fellow classmates’ hard work pay off and to feel the mutual encouragement being shared all around. Plus, nothing beats the thrill of nailing a tricky phrase while trying not to visibly sigh with relief! These performances not only showcased our God-given talents but also highlighted the strong sense of community and support at our school.

Victorian Flute Guild Ensemble Competition

Peter Sheridan, IBP Coordinator and Head of Woodwinds

On Sunday May 26th a small group of amazing woodwind players competed at the 2024 Victorian Flute Guild Ensemble Competition in Kew.

There was a variety of ensemble sizes, including duets, trios, quartets and even the 12 member Year 9 Woodwind Ensemble.

Sarah Cranney, Alice Giang and Claire Pepper won 1st place in their section.

Congratulations to our young and exciting musicians. The DCC Year 6 Woodwind Trio performed a variety of musical styles for the 2024 Victorian Flute Guild Ensemble competition in the Primary section, ‘Duets plus One.’  The two flutes and clarinet trio created a beautiful lyrical sound, with excellent rhythm as well as musical flair. We are so proud of their efforts in finding time to practice in extra rehearsals as a trio.

The Donvale College Music Department is blessed with hard-working young musicians who are dedicated to creating some high-level performance standards. It was a delight to hear all of these ensembles play so well! Many second and third places were achieved and our Year 9 Woodwind ensemble won second place, amongst some very competitive schools.

Bravo to Bethany Tabart (11 VCE) and Grace Han (11), who really performed and prepared their music so well!

Thank you to our parents for their support in transporting and motivating their children early on a Sunday morning to this competition.
