Mistakes are Stepping Stones to Learning

Tanya Vaughan, Deputy Principal - Head of Primary

Choose Kindness! This has been the theme that has resonated across the term as the Primary school has considered the power of our words and actions. Every day we have a choice. We can use our words and actions to MAKE someone’s day, or, sadly, BREAK someone’s day. We can say the wrong thing, we can do the wrong thing, we can offend, we can put down and we can mock.

We can all make mistakes.

Sometimes our wrong choices result in a ‘friendship bump’, a moment in time when friendship is hard and we need to learn to talk our differences and concerns out in healthy and respectful ways. Sometimes our wrong choices see us being ‘unkind on purpose’, using our words to hurt others in the process.

We can all learn from our mistakes.

Learning to take responsibility for our actions and words is one of the most important lessons that we can learn. Learning to say sorry, to admit fault, to take ownership of our decisions rather than casting blame on others or situations, is a powerful lesson for us all. When we take the time to own our choices and recognise the consequences our decisions have on others, we continue to shine the love that Jesus taught His disciples when He said,

“‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.”  Matthew 22: 37-39

It is our deep hope that DCC will be known as a community that Chooses Kindness and that our students will be known as children who Choose Kindness. It starts by allowing the love of God to permeate in every part of our life and living - in our words, in our actions, and shown by our love.

Join me in praying this for and over our community every day!
